That would be the Indianapolis 500 run every year over the Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. The speedway was first built in the spring and summer of 1909 with a gravel and tar track surface. Very soon the asphalt breaking up led to two fatal accidents. The track was then repaved in the fall of 1909 with 3.2 million bricks earning the race course the nickname of "The Brickyard." A 200 mile race was held over the Memorial Day weekend in 1910.

The first Indianapolis 500 was run on Memorial Day, May 30, 1911 and has become an annual event over the Memorial Day weekend. In 1961 only the main straight was resurfaced with asphalt except for a 3-foot wide section at the start/finish line that was left with the bricks showing. Since then the entire 2.5 mile track (except for the 3-foot section of bricks) has been resurfaced in 1976, 1988, 1995 and 2004.

Before World War I Memorial Day was officially called Decoration Day. This day was to honor all military personnel who had died during the US Civil War, both Union and Confederate. It was first observed on May 30, 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery, three years after the Civil War ended. By 1890 all of the northern states recognized the holiday. But the southern states did not! Each southern state had their own "Memorial Day"-like holiday and they were on different days of the year.

It was not until after World War I that Decoration Day included honoring US military personnel who had died in all wars in which the United States was involved. After this change the southern states began to honor the May 30th date. However they still to this day also commemorate the individual days they first used.

So the actual answer to the question is that, yes, all 50 states do celebrate Memorial Day as it is a national holiday. Decoration Day was officially renamed to Memorial Day in 1967 and in 1971 the holiday was moved from May 30th to the last Monday in May.

All banks are closed on Memorial Day in all states, including South Carolina. Memorial Day is a Federal holiday. The banks in the US do not open on Federal Holidays. The Post Office and most other government buildings are also closed.
