On the last Monday in May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day honoring those who have died in the service of this great nation, while serving in combat. The holiday began in 1868, when General Order No. 11 was promulgated by General John Logan. It commanding that the 30th of May would be a day "strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in the defense of their country".

Although begun as an honor primarily for Union Soldiers who had died during the U.S. Civil War, this holiday, initially called, "Decoration Day", was recognized by both North and South by the end of World Wat I. This holiday eventually grew in favor to include the fallen of all wars of The United States of America, and with the passage of time, became to be known as, Memorial Day.

Memorial Day honors all US military personnel who have died during all wars and military actions in which the United States has been involved since the US Civil War. When it was first observed on May 30, 1868, three years after the Civil War ended it was called Decoration Day because the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers who were buried at Arlington National Cemetery were decorated with flowers.

Remembrance Day is also known as Armistice Day and Veteran's Day

Memorial Day was organized shortly following the Civil War with the purpose of honoring deceased soldiers. Later, the holiday took on greater meaning as it began to include the dead from other conflicts and ultimately deceased family members. Today Memorial Day commemorates military dead, familial dead, and ancestral dead through parades, grave side decorations, and even 21 gun salutes in Federal cemeteries. While several different stories circulate about the origin of Memorial Day, the central New York village of Waterloo has legally established its claim regarding the founding of the holiday. In 1865, Henry Welles, a local pharmacist, proposed a celebration honoring those who fought and died in the Civil War. A Union General, John Murray liked the idea and helped establish a committee. On May 5, 1866, the flags in Waterloo were flown at half mast, a parade was organized, and ceremonies where held in all three Waterloo cemeteries. One hundred years later, Waterloo gained the official designation as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

Unfortunately, since the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971 moved the holiday from its original date of May 30 to the last Monday in the month of May so that federal employees could get another three-day weekend, much of the significance of the holiday has been lost. Nowadays it is mostly just considered to be the unofficial start of summer and people have barbecues and parties and do other fun things.

There is Decoration Day in Britain, Canada and the other Commonwealth nations. The date is different but the idea is the same.

The US Memorial Day was actually begun by the grieving women of the ex-Confederacy, and was originally May 10, the day Stonewall Jackson died. After a few years the idea was co-opted nationally and moved away from May 10, to the end of the month.

The President is not required to make any speeches except the state of the union address and that can be sent to Congress rather than spoken. He speaks on other occasions because he asked to and because he is always campaigning either for himself , his agenda or his party. People like to hear the President speak and it is not that much trouble to read a speech that someone writess for him. Most presidents like to speak and consider it an honor to speak at special events. Also, if speaks on one holiday but not another, he might offend somebody, so the president tends to speak whenver he reasonably can and has an audience.
