You need a diet coke , a straw and some mentos .First, open the diet coke. Then ,put the straw inside .After that , put a mentos inside quickly and run away because it will flash on you if you are at the place. It is very exciting because it will flash very high if put a lot of mentos inside .

Why does it happen? Just because the diet coke won't have alot of sugar and if it touch some sweet things suddenly , it will be a diet coke geyser.

The chemical reaction causes the Diet Coke to foam at a rapid rate and "explode" into the air. Mint is used instead of fruit-flavor Mentos because fruit flavored Mentos have a smooth coating which slows the reaction.

Mint Mentos dont work, use the fruity kind. To get the best results, take a liter of diet coke, shake it, add some fruity mentos, and shake again. then uncap and run away!!

Mentos will dissolve into any water-based liquid - including ice tea. It won't be as spectacular as if they are dropped into a bottle of coke - but it will be pretty obvious they are dissolving.

When you do the soda thing, slide mentos into the 2liter bottle of soda, when i goes off make sure your standing back. The explosion will not harm you from the inside or out.

sugar, glucose sugar, hydrogenated coconut oil, gellan gum, dextrin, natural and artificial flavor, gum arabic, and coloring inside/outside of it. They have almost the same ingredients except that mint mentos has rice starch and mixed fruit has artificial flavoring and coloring.

Menthos does "blow up" with Coke. It would do the same with any carbonated drink. The reason a carbonated drink container may be seen to erupt in a fountain of bubbles is due to the rapid release of carbon dioxide. The release is due to small roughness on the Mentos' surface causing gas bubbles to "seed" and the formation of bubbles to proceed rapidly. Rapid release of Carbon Dioxide will cause bubbles and an increased pressure and resulting blow up.

It is worth adding a comment about the Mentos hoax around the Internet.
The action has nothing to do with chemical reactions but is a physical process. It doesn't pose risk to person who consumes Coke with Mentos. Fizzing is normally felt in the mouth when drinking Coke and is sign of the carbonation releasing carbon dioxide from the drink. The addition of Mentos speeds up the process and would not do any harm from the gas itself. Of course, one may imagine an extraordinary circumstance where someone would finished the whole bottle of carbonated beverage without burping and with all gas still in liquid. For such case, dropping Mentos down the throat while sealing the mouth might pose a threat. (It is unimaginable that someone would go that far for such self torture). When mentos touches the pop, it forms bubbles on the mentos, eating away the coating and the carbon dioxide mixes with it making fizz as it breaks it down.

Noothing is smooth, everything has little "potholes", although they are minisclue and not visible. Mentos have a lot of these little holes in them, where air can get trapped. When dropping a mento into a soda, the air bubbles release, this causes some bubbles to form and exit the bottle. The roughness of the candy also reacts with the gas in the soda, forming more bubbles that are trying to get the the surface. These bubbles form the "geyser".

No, not always. I just discovered that Mentos chewing gum contains gelatin. I threw it away.

Because the chemicals in diet coke react with the chemicals in the mentos, Normal coke has the same chemicals that mentos has, that is why you need to have a positive and negative to react, Normal coke and mentos is positive and positive.

when the mentos hits the surface of the coke, the compressed carbon dioxide forms bubble on the surface of the mentos. and it is released into the air and pushes the coke out with it.

also, water molecules connect tightly together creating surface tension that is quickly broken down by the gelatine and the gum Arabic from the mentos

the experiment also works on lots of other things however, it works especially well on mentos because mentos have a lot of nucleation sites. these are areas that co2 can create bubbles. they can be scratches on a surface or anything. the compressed co2 from the soft drink then create thousands of bubbles in each nucleation site.

I did that in Science Camp once. When you put mentos in a soda bottle the soda will shoot up creating a little shoot up of soda. Its very fun!
