With spot silver @ $24.68 per oz. + $1.00 over = $25.68 divided by 31.1035 grams per oz. = .83 cents per gram x 20 grams = $16.60 pure silver value. Add a few dollars for age and condition and it would probably be worth about $20.00. A lot depends on condition of the coin!

Rampant inflation in the 1980s reduced the peso's value so much that the coins and bills then in circulation were withdrawn around 1992, and replaced with "nuevo pesos" (new pesos) at the rate of 1000 to 1. That meant a coin such as yours worth 100 old pesos would be exchanged for 1/10 of a new peso. At current rates a new peso is worth about a U.S. dime, so 1/10 of that is ... a penny.

However, if you have a 1987 100 Peso World Wildlife Fund 25th Anniversary silver proof (has many monarch butterflies on it), it contains 1 full troy ounce of silver. The coin weighs more than an ounce because it's only 72% silver. Production was limited to approximately 30,000 coins, and due to collector value, it's worth more than just the silver value, up to $60 if it's still carded and has the certificate of authenticity.

There were no gold coins of that denomination made in 1898; if you have one, it may not be real gold and it may have been designed as a promotional item. Perhaps you mean a silver dollar. These were called Morgan silver dollars, after their designer, George T. Morgan. In poor condition, this coin is valued at about $31, and in excellent condition, it can bring as much as $331. Or maybe you are asking about a gold coin of another amount-- there was a gold coin in 1898, the Liberty $2.5 dollar denomination. One of these in perfect condition can be worth as much as $447.

You didn't provide the denomination, but if it's from circulation it's probably not worth very much. Mexico revalued its currency in 1993 due to rampant inflation and removed the older issues from circulation.

You didn't mention the denomination, but unless it's a gold coin, then it's value will be only a few cents in the U.S. Coins are not exchangeable at currency exchange places (only paper money), so the only place you can use your coin is either in Mexico, or to sell it to a coin dealer for their miscellaneous foreign coin bin for about a nickel.

Most often "Peso" refers to Mexican currency. However Mexico is not the only country that uses pesos. Some other countries that use pesos are: Argentina, Chile, Cuba, and Uruguay. Ask another question and include the following information: date, country of origin, and the denomination. For example "What is the value of a 1978 Mexican peso" or "What is the value of a 1978 Cuban peso". If your coins is from a different country or denomination just include the correct information.

It's not 1 dollar, it's 1 peso. Mexico uses the "$" symbol to stand for pesos.

The peso's value has fluctuated over the last 10 years but it's been around 7 to 10 US cents recently (2011-2012).
