Does a US passport have to be valid for 6 months past the date of travel to Mexico?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This depends on whether you are concerned about entering Mexico or returning to the USA. Since Mexican tourist permits are generally issued for 180 days, if your passport will expire before you come back, then yes, your passport should be valid for six months past the entry date. But if you are asking whether the Mexican government has such a requirement, the answer is no.

There is some confusion about this. The US Consular Service website say yes, but the Mexican government immigration websites say nothing about the length of validity, unless you are applying for a visa for lucrative activity. I have never heard of anyone being denied entry as long as their US passport was valid when they entered Mexico. However, your passport must be valid when you return to the USA.

What are some misconceptions typical tourists have about Mexico?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

1. Mexico is small, underpopulated and hot. It is neither:

  • It has the same size of Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany combined.
  • It has a population of 114 million people (11th in the world).
  • Of course there are deserts and jungles in Mexico, but the Mexican plateau is mostly temperate, and some regions on northern Mexico and along the Sierra Madre mountain ranges have seasonal snowfalls.

2. All Mexicans look like Speedy Gonzalez. That is a laughable stereotype: there are white, black, mestizo, Asian and even middle-eastern Mexicanos.

3. Mexico is a backward, undeveloped country with adobe houses, burritos and sombreros. Farther from the truth: Mexico has poor regions, but there are areas with a development on par to countries such as Norway, the United States or Japan. One instance is Mexico City, with a GDP Per Capita on par to Portugal and South Korea.

4. Mexico's Independence Day is celebrated on Cinco de Mayo. The "Cinco de Mayo" celebration commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza. The Battle was important because 4,000 Mexican soldiers defeated a much better-equipped French army composed of 8,000 men that had not been defeated for almost 50 years. Mexico's Independence Day is celebrated on September 15th on Mexico City's zocalo. A military parade takes place on September 16.

Does one need pasport to travel to Mexico from USA?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you are traveling to Mexico by any mode of transportation other than road, you will need to have a valid passport. This includes but is not limited to air, rail, and sea.

If you are traveling from the US to Mexico via road, you need two pieces of identification. One must be a government- issued ID that has your picture on it, such as a driver's license. The second piece of identification you must have is some sort of proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
Yes, since 2007. You can cross the border by land with a Pass Card but up to certain miles.

Is Mexico an interesting place?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mexico is nothing you imagine it to be, it has clear turquoise water, white sand, wonderful weather especially in the summer and has ancient ruins. There are so many activities your wonderful hotel provides for you such as swimming with dolphins, sailing, and exploring caves/cenotes. At my hotel they also provided breakfast lunch and dinner, which was sooo delicious. It is very tropical: palm trees, coconuts, turtles, and even beach volleyball. The ancient ruins are unbelievable and something you don't want to miss out on. It is an amazing journey just waiting for you! So yes it is worth visiting.

Why is Mexico City a good travel spot?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, it is. Some points of interest include:

  • Centro historico - Where the Mexico City cathedral, Plaza de la Constitucion, Templo Mayor Aztec ruins and Palacio Nacional (with many murals from Diego Rivera) are found.
  • Xochimilco - Where you can find the wrongly named 'floating gardens' of Aztec times.
  • Coyoacan - A place to see for his historic streets, old layout and relaxed atmosphere.
  • Zona Rosa - The 'pink zone' is a shopping, disco and entertaining district. The 'pink' has taken another meaning as many gay bars and shops have opened during recent years.
  • Chapultepec - One of the largest public parks in the city. Atop the hill of Chapultepec there is a castle, now a history museum, where one of the most celebrated battles of the Mexican-American War took place.

Mostly by car or bus. The cities that have it, such as Mexico City, Guadalajara or Monterrey, have an underground metro system. For inter-city transport, light rail can be used. For inter-state transport, car or bus is most usually used as Mexico has an interstate highway system much like the US'. However "cheap airlines" and some railroad can be used. Whenever available, ferries can be found.
