It was invented/created May 9th 2009 by Swedish Markus 'Notch' Persson. Its first version was 0.0.0, where it was simply called 'Cave Game' and all you could do was walk around in a tiny map with 3 blocks and horrible map generation. (Bad grass texture and holes in the map with cobblestone caves.) The first three blocks were grass, cobblestone and air.
