Just to add some more info:
When you go on some Beta Online servers, you should ask what hacks are allowed on their servers. Some server mods will not allow ones like:
- Zombe's Fly Mod or any of Zombe's mods.
- Millionaire Mod.
- Too Many Items Mod.
They may consider this cheating so always ask, or you are in danger of being banned.

now you need a flint and steel
now with your obsidian (get atleast 15 peices) make a 6 blocks tall by 4 blocks wide but do not fill it in, make it like a frame then take your flint and steel, point it at a peice of obsidian in the portal and right click , if done correctly then you should see a purple thing inside the obsidian frame then just step in, wait a few seconds and your off to the nether
