For flowing water, place another block on the 'source block' which will remove any water currently flowing from that block.

For a pond or river though, every block is a source block, you just have to fill it in manually, or at least cover the top surface.

There are no good servers to grief. Especially in 1.4.2. Griefing is for rookies.

its amazing how easy it is to find good seeds. but the best way is to just put random stuff like worstseedever or Wolf

Look into the .minecraft folder for a folder called saves. Copy that file or secure it in some other way and then replace it with the other saves file in your new .minecraft folder.

The seeds in minecraft only generate a world's landscape. Whatever you build in that seed is not part of the seed, it's part of your save. You can download other people's worlds though if they have a link

It depends on what mod you are using, it could use 'scary' noises. Normally the sounds play when you are near large underground caves.

You can place coal in the furnace, then place any wood on the top slot to burn it to charcoal, or use a wood log on the bottom slot and one at the top and it'll burn that way as well.
