The purpose of starting a business depends on the person starting it. However, the underlying reason is usually one of three:

If the person wants to make more money than she currently makes, and if she has enough drive and motivation for it, she'll often begin a business toward that end. Then, there is the person who begins a business to prove that she can indeed "do something right" or fix a broken thing. Whether it's to prove something to herself or to someone else, and whether it's to create an answer to a nagging problem (example: build a better wheelchair for a specific illness) this reason can be a strong motivator.
