What happen to the pepperidge Molasses cookies?

This was the best toasting bread ever! I can still remember the flavor and texture. About 15-20 years ago my Mom and I wrote Pepperage Farms and it was a financial decision to stop producing this wonderful corn molasses bread. What a mistake! TRIED TO MAKE IT MYSELF BUT FAILLED. I hope they bring it back. It is sure to be a big hit. Hope they bring it back while the few of us left still remember it.

PLEASE BRING IT BACK.

What lowered tax on molasses to encourage payment of tax in 1764?

American importers were not paying the excessively high duty that had been placed on Sugar (molasses) by the Molasses Act of 1733. They found it cheaper to pay bribes of a penny or so per gallon, to the customs collectors. When George Grenville became Prime Minister, he had Parliament overhaul the old act with a new Sugar Act, 1764. The new act lowered the tax on sugar (molasses) entering the colonies, but it also created a new system for enforcing the act, making sure that the lowered duties would be collected. In New England, where molasses was a major trade item used in making various drinks as well as a sweetener, there was immediate concern. A Boston town meeting declared that the city would boycott (not purchase) all British imports to that colony. Other New England cities, including New York, followed Boston’s lead.

What is the density of molasses?

I am both a Ph.D. chemist and a cook. For this chemist and cook, the density of granulated sugar is 196 g per CUP. If you check the USDA web site, they round off 1 cup to 200g. I think you need to recalibrate your scale. http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Finally, some recipes with large quantities of sugar fail to correct for the added volume of the sugar. I recall one recipe called for 8 cups of sugar with 9 cups of blueberries. Its author stated that it would yield 9 cups of preserves, which my wife later discovered to be incorrect. Using the information above, 8.0 cups of granulated sugar would increase the volume of the preserves by another 3.5 cups! The bottom line is that this recipe yielded about 12 cups of preserves, so be sure to sterilize enough containers!
