I wrote this play and am very pleased with myself. It took me a
few hours to complete, after thinking of a basic storyline. I hope
you enjoy. Just copy and paste to pages, word or and other
"notepad" writing material on your computer and you will have a
wonderful Mothers day play. 9 characters, and if you think
necessary then you may need to use a stage director and
CAST: Older Child 1,2,3&4(OC 1,2,3&4) Page 1
Younger Child 1,2&3(YC 1,2&3)
Starts out with mother holding baby and toddler pulling on
Older children 1 & 3 enter.
OC 1: Mother, we got the water from the well.
Mother: Oh thank you children, I appreciate it much.
OC 3: Your welcome, Mum.
Young children 1,2 &3 come running in with dog.
YC 2: Mumsy the doggy got lose!
YC 3: Mommy, we did try to catch it!
YC 1: But he was just to quick!
Mom: It's okay! I will catch him later, but thanks for
Mom slowly looking for dog, talking to her self.
Mother: Oh how I love my children! So great and so mischievous!
(laughs softly) My, they are wonderful. Sometimes they can be
naughty, yes, but they are so sweet. It's almost as if impressing
me is natural, though they do not know it. Well, I have got to
hurry home and cook up some stew for the kids tonight! Come along
Rover. (mother and dog enter stage and begin stirring when OC 1 and
OC 4 enter stage carrying a platter of treats)
OC 2: Look Mother! We made dessert!
OC 1: Yes Mum, when you were chasing Rover we came in and used
your recipe to make cookies!
Mother: That's fantastic children! Thank you. Will you please
tell everyone to come in for dinner chores?
OC 1&2: Yes Mama!
Mother: (Starts humming, Rover follows her around as she does
(Go and get other children, everyone comes back on stage with a
mat and bowl and spoon, YC 1,2, and 3 set table while OC 1 and 2
help mother dish out food, OC 3&4 get water from well)
OC 3:(walking to well) Do you think Ma loves us?
OC 4: Why yes! Of course she does! She shows her love
OC 3: How? She says I love you at night I suppose.
OC 4: That and cooks, cleans, prepares, washes and works, all
just to keep us together as a family. She loves us very much.
OC 4: I guess your right! We better hurry! Supper's getting
(Everyone sits down for dinner, family conversation)
YC 1: Mama, how much do you love us?
Mother: Down to the bottom of the ocean and to the top of the
YC 2: Mumsies, do you love us more than God?
Mother: Honey, God loves us all the most, but I love you almost
YC 3: Mommy, am I your favorite child?
Mother: Now there! Don't you know that I don't pick favorites,
you are all my favorite!
OC 1: Mother, do you think that Daddy is in heaven? What if he
is still you know, living?
Mother: Golly! Honey, we buried you father! He is not still
living. (Looks sad, whimpers softly) But I believe that he is
living in heaven with God.
OC 3: Mama, may I be excused?
OC 2: No! Wait! I will be right back! (gets dessert)
Mother: Thank you dear.
OC 4: MMMM! I love cookies! Mum, can we eat them now?
Mother: Go ahead children! Remember to bust you place.
(children eat fast and bust place, get blankets for bed)
(everyone laying down blankets, Mother helping younger
OC 3&4: (not in bed yet, they get to stay up later)
(Mother talking to them all sitting on stools)
OC 3: Mama, did you know I love you so much! More than you can
Mother: I love you back too. Life is tough without your father,
but there isn't a second I don't love you children.
OC 4: Mum, what would a mother do for child?
Mother: A mother sacrifices herself for her daughter or son. Did
you know that?
OC 3: What if she were to die?
Mother: She would do it anyways. You can't replace a mother, but
you can have magnificent female family and friends.
OC 4: Mum, when life gave you lemons, did you make lemonade?
Mother: Indeed I tried to, but it's tough and that's what I am
here for, to help you through the rough spots of life. Now, I think
it's bedtime for you 2...off you go!
OC 3: Yes Mama, I love you!
(falls asleep, next morning everyone wakes up, stands up, lines
up horizontally and bows saying "I love you MOMMY!"
