Can you survive falling off a cliff?
Your body's mass is accelerated by gravity to a velocity that would depend upon the distance you fall, but not exceeding terminal velocity (around 120 mph, 190 kph), which would require a fall of at least 500 feet.
The potential for injury comes from the sudden deceleration and impact with the ground or another surface (rock, tree, water). Except on very soft surfaces such as deep, loose snow, the deceleration can cause damage to the brain and internal organs. The impact can break bones, splinter ribs, or fracture the skull. All of these injuries are potentially, but not necessarily, fatal.

How does friction help in rock climbing?
If there were no friction you wouldn't be able to stand on a hill without sliding down it, let alone climb a rock face.
More specifically...
In any technical rock climbing you are required to use your feet and fingers to balance, hold on, etc. This often requires a little ingenuity, and always requires a good deal of friction since you often are standing on ledges and nubs smaller than your thumb. Some moves may even require you to push off of a smooth rock and just hope that your climbing shoes are sticky enough to give you the boost you need.

You use tools called Ice Axes and Crampons. Normally you have a rope, harness, and helmet but those are the two essentials to actually scaling the ice. The you just walk up to a nice solid ice flow and head up.
Oh and I am not advocating soloing anything. Bring a friend and a rope.
Here are some photo's that should help explain.
