When the Colonies of New Haven and Connecticut merged in 1662, by order of Charles II, and became religiously liberal, New Haven Puritan, Robert Treat and his fellow Intolerants, came to New Jersey, to pursue their theocratic beliefs. Newark was founded in 1666 on the banks of the Pesayeck (Passaic) River on land purchased from the Hackensack Nation.
For nearly a century, if you were not a member of Treat's congregation, you were not considered a citizen of Newark, and were deprived of governmental rights, since the church was the government.
