Newbery Medal

The Newbery Medal is "To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field." A committee of the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association selects it and honor books each year. It is awarded to a book published by an American publisher by an American author or resident of the United States.

How does a book get selected for a Newbery Medal?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

My sister served on the award committee several years ago. Each member of the committee receives a copy of every book that qualifies, or is believed to qualify, for the award for that year. The committee consists of educators and librarians from across the US. My sister received over 400 books!

The first step is to eliminate any books that do not fit the requirements. Each member then shares the books they feel are worthy and a listing of all of the ones that people like is created and the rest are eliminated. Then they all take time to carefully review the books on the list and start narrowing it down to a winner. They may also select a few Honor books for those that are worthy of notice.
