Mestrovic made a bronze bust (1952) that is held in the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade and a statue (1955/56) placed at the Ruder Boskovic Institute in Zagreb. This statue was moved to Nikola Tesla Street in Zagreb's city centre on the 150th anniversary of Tesla's birth, with the Ruder Boskovic Institute to receive a duplicate. In 1976, a bronze statue of Tesla was placed at Niagara Falls, New York. A similar statue was also erected in his hometown of Gospic in 1986.

The SI unit tesla (T) for measuring magnetic flux density or magnetic induction (commonly known as the magnetic field ) was named in Tesla¹s honour at the Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures, Paris in 1960 and The Tesla crater on the far side of the Moon and the minor planet 2244 Tesla are also named after him.

The street sign "Nikola Tesla Corner" was recently placed on the corner of the 40th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan. There is a large photo of Tesla in the Statue of Liberty Museum. The Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey has a daily science demonstration of the Tesla Coil creating a million volts of electricity before the spectators eyes. In 1886, Tesla formed his own company, Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing. The initial financial investors disagreed with Tesla on his plan for an alternating current motor and eventually relieved him of his duties at the company. Tesla worked in New York as a common laborer from 1886 to 1887 to feed himself and raise capital for his next project.

His mother's name was Djouka, wife of Reverend Milutin Tesla. He was born in a small village named Smiljan now a part of Yugoslavia. His mother was an accomplished needleworker and inventor of household devices but she could not read or write. Nikola Tesla was born on July 10th, 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia. He was born to Milutan, a Serbian Orthodox priest, and Djuka, a craftswoman. Both of his parents were very intelligent, just like Tesla. Tesla got his engineering mind from his mother, who could memorize entire poems and could create many different tools, even though she was illiterate. Tesla had four other siblings, his brother Dane and his sisters, Milka, Angelica, and Marica. Dane was the most popular child and was called the family genius. However, Dane died in a horse-riding accident when Tesla was only five years old.

Though history books continue to give Guglielmo Marconi credit for the invention of radio, Tesla's lectures on wireless broadcasting precede Marconi's radio patents by some three years. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the matter in Tesla's favor, and struck down Marconi's patent claim, in 1943.

Guglielmo Marconi stole Tesla's drawings from the US Patent Office, and it was only after an extended lawsuit that Marconi was exposed as a fraud, and Tesla was credited with his own invention. In 1888 Tesla designed the first practical system of generating and transmitting alternating current for electric power. The American rights to this epoch-making invention were bought by the American inventor George Westinghouse, who demonstrated (1893) the system for the first time at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Two years later Tesla's alternating-current motors were installed at the Niagara Falls power project.
