Palm Sunday is in commemoration of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem in the last week before He was arrested and crucified. People lined His path or waved palm branches, a symbol at the time of victory.

John 12:12-13

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

AnswerJohn Shelby Spong (Jesus for the NonReligious) puts it this way: The ]ewish eight day celebration of the harvest, known as Sukkoth, and also called the Festival of the Tabernacles or Booths, was probably the most popular holiday among the Jews in the first century. In the observance of Sukkoth, worshippers processed through Jerusalem and in the Temple, waving a bunch of leafy branches made of willow, myrtle and palm. As they waved these branches in that procession, the worshippers recited words from Psalm 118, the psalm normally used at Sukkoth. Among these words were "Save us, we beseech you, O Lord." Save us in Hebrew is hosianna or 'hosanna'. This is typically followed by "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. (Psalm 118:25-6)."

Mark's Gospel was the earliest of the New Testament gospels. It took the Sukkoth traditions and transferred them from autumn to the Passover season for the procession story. Mark 11:8 says (NAB), "Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields." The words used at the Sukkoth are reflected in Mark 11:9: "And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord." Because the Passover season is too early for 'leafy branches' (except palms), John actually says 'palm branches', creating our modern tradition of Palm Sunday.

Firstly, they usually read two Gospel readings. Near the start of mass they read the Gospel about the entrance on Palm Sunday of Jesus into Jerusalem. Later they read the story of his passion from Holy Thursday and Good Friday. The second of these Gospels is considerably longer than any other Sunday Gospel.

What Hebrew word used on Palm Sunday means save we ask?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You're thinking of the word Hosanna, but this word isn't actually Hebrew. It's a modified word that came from Hebrew. Christians have made this into a single word, and converted it to Greek pronunciation "Hosanna," and translate it as "save we ask."

In Hebrew this is 2 words, usually hyphenated:

הושיעה־נא (Hoshiaʿ-na) = "Help please!"

"Na" (נא) is a particle word that is attached to commands to soften them, in the way that we add the word "please" to commands in English. Na can also be translated in older language as "prithee," "I pray thee," or "I beg of thee."

Note:

In Jewish liturgy, the words "Hoshia-na" or "Hosha-na" is applied specifically to the Hosha-na Service, a cycle of prayers from which a selection is sung each morning during Sukkot, the Autumn Harvest Festival of Tabernacles. The complete cycle is sung on the seventh day of the festival, which is called Hosha־na Rabbah (הושע־נא רבא, "Great Hosha-na".

What happens on palm Sunday?

Jesus came down from the mountain where he was fasting for 40 days. And people welcomed him by throwing palms under his donkey so his riding animal would not touch the ground. this was kind of the red carpet treatment. but he was riding a donkey which is more like a poor mans car nowadays. the juxtaposition is supposed to show you how the king of the universe was still a poor man by choice. And also that even-though he was worshipped now, he would be given up to humiliation, torture and death in less than a week.

Christians now bring palms to church, or other flowers if they cannot find palms, to show they worship Jesus.

The palms are then burned and used for ash Wednesday of the next year. Where Catholics wear ash on their foreheads to symbolize their sinfulness.

Palm Sunday is when we celebrate Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem for Passover. We call it Palm Sunday because, while Jesus was riding the donkey into the city, his followers were waving palm branches and shouting "Hosanna, blessed be the King!"

What does the palm have to do with Palm Sunday?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

"Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The gospels record the arrival of Jesus riding into the city on a donkey, while the crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the street and shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David" and "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord" to honor him as their long-awaited Messiah and King.

The significance of Jesus riding a donkey and having his way paved with palm branches is a fulfillment of a prophecy spoken by the prophet Zechariah (Zechariah 9:9). In biblical times, the regional custom called for kings and nobles arriving in procession to ride on the back of a donkey. The donkey (or domesticated ass) was a symbol of peace; those who rode upon them proclaimed peaceful intentions. The laying of palm branches indicated that the king or dignitary was arriving in victory or triumph."

What is the link between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

On the day before Ash Wednesday the leftover palms from last year's Palm Sunday are burned and the ashes are used on Ash Wednesday to 'anoint' the faithful.

Palm Sunday is when people celebrate Jesus entering Jerusalem and ash Wednesday is when you use the left over palm leaves from palm Sunday. They are burnt to an ash and then in the mass the congregation is blessed with them.
