How much are parakeets at petco?

somewhere around 15 bucks (give or take a few bucks). My advice: don't buy-instead check the found ads in the paper every day. It's how I got 2 of my 3 birds and a lost bird sure needs a good home!

Does a Parakeet need a companion parakeet to be healthy?

parakeets need partners or they get very lonely when your out of the room, shool, work, ect.

Can the different ages of parakeet stay in the same cage?

Yes, but they probably shouldn't if they are both males, because the older one will pick on the younger one and/or they may not get along too well. Have a second cage on hand, just in case, and let them get to know one another before just forcing them together.

How do you know when parakeets have mated?

You will know when your budgie birds are ready when the pair start to be more active. A male will feed a female and they will tap the beaks together. Just know that a female budgie will be ready when she has a brown/tan color above the beak. (you must have a nest box for the bird to lay her eggs.)

What Country or region of origin does parakeets come from?

Short answer: mostly Australia.

There is actually no such bird as a "parakeet". The term "parakeet" is a generalised term to cover numerous species of smaller, long-tailed parrots. The word tends to be used in countries outside of the birds' native lands. For example, the term "parakeet" is never used in Australia to refer to budgies, lorikeets or cockatiels, all of which are native to Australia, yet these birds are commonly known as "parakeets" overseas.

Birds classified under the name "parakeet" are actually unrelated to each other, except by means of all being in the parrot family. They are all seed, nut and fruit-eaters, with some species feeding off pollen and nectar they get from native flowers - and they do tend to be from Australia.

Why does your parakeet continuously run back and forth in his cage?

Parakeets were once wild animals and their instinct is to be hyper-vigilant about their environment. In the wild, this is how they stay alive! They can be watchful and use their eyes and ears to sense if danger is near! You could be a predator, or someone that they don't completely trust...OR they may just be watching to see what you will say or do. All of this is just instinct. They like being softly talked to in a sweet tone of voice. They will listen. Remember how much bigger human beings are, to birds! If someone the size of a house approached a human being (like you), you would stay in one place and watch for signs of danger, too! :)

What can parakeets NOT eat?

The list of things not to give your parakeet is a pretty good sized one, you really should research which foods you would like to give them. The BIG no-no's are choclate, milk and avacado. Remember: Parakeets are lactoseintolerant.

Can parakeets live outside?

  2. Flys very much.
  3. Doesn't close eyes very long/a lot.
  4. Eats and drinks more likely.
  5. Interacts.
  6. Does not let you touch him. (Some will because they are trained)

How do parakeets get mites?

Feather mites are very common between the barbs of the primary flight and tail feathers of pet and aviary budgies in Australia. Feather mites are most easily seen with the naked eye by transilluminating the feathers. Feather mites are not blood sucking mites. Feather mites are similar in some ways to house dust mites. I suspect these feather mites can spread some infections such as PBFD but don't know if this has been proven. Feather mites in budgies are usually easily eradicated with 3-4 treatments as shown below at 2-4 week intervals of each bird in the aviary.

What happens if a parakeet is not flying?

if your parakeets egg dont hatch in about two weeks, it might mean that your baby parakeet has died or has gone rotten, or could have suffocated

What should you do when a parakeet lays a egg?

You put the eggs carefully in a box in the corner of your parakeet's cage. Then you make sure the box is warm and put the eggs in the warm box and put the mother and father next to it, so they can fertilize it . After that you will have a baby parakeet in need of care.

Can parakeets eat a hamster food like sunflower seeds?

They should not eat salted sunflower seeds, the salt is toxic and can kill them.

Either buy unsalted seeds or wash them with warm water for a while . Parakeets are very small so too much salt could add up quickly in them, and too many sunflower seeds may be to much fat as well.

Just try a couple unsalted.

How do you know a parakeet lays eggs?

Your parakeet will sit in a secluded place in the cage, such as a corner under some newspaper(if that is at the bottom).
My experience with a parakeet pair is that the female will spend time on the bottom of the cage looking for material to pile together to form a nest. If nothing is available the female could lay an egg anyway, even if a male isn't around. Without nesting material, the female I had pushed the egg around for most of a day until it broke. With nesting material (a small cardboard box with shredded paper and string) the female went inside, layed one or more eggs, and sat on them until they hatched (since she was also with a male bird).
She will probaly eat a lot more than normal. To test, put some sticks in her cage- and if she starts to build a nest then that usally means she's going to lay eggs in about a couple of days and to stop her having eggs make sure it is not warm where she is.
If your female has mated with a male parakeet, chances are eggs are on the way. However, females keets can lay infertile eggs without the benefit of a male bird (hormonal thing). There's really no way you would know in advance that a female is getting ready to lay eggs except that she may exhibit nesting behavior or her cloaca could look swollen just prior to laying an egg.
First you must figure out if your parakeet is Male or Female. To tell the gender of your parakeet look at the 'cere' above your birds beak. If this is bright blue then your budgie is a Male. If it is a Pinkish-Brown then your budgie is a Female. Males will not lay eggs.

You can get a rough idea of whether or not your budgie will lay eggs by reading these dot points. If all of these are 'ticked off' then it will be a quite, probable possibility:

1) Your budgie is female

2)There is an easy to access Nestbox

3)there is plenty of food

4)there is plenty of clean water

DO NOT GIVE YOUR BIRD A NESTBOX UNLESS IF YOU A PROPERLY BREEDING THEM OR PROBLEMS MAY OCCUR SUCH AS EGG BINDING!

Do parakeets sit on their eggs?

nope. sometimes females will lay eggs even if no male is around. they're not fertilized, though.

How can you tell a male from female parakeet?

It depends on what sort of parakeet. There are many different types of parakeets and therefore different ways of telling the sex of it. In budgerigars (one type of parakeet) the males have a blue cere (bit above the beak) and females have a brown cere.

there is a way but its very hard to tell however it can be done- hold the bird tightly but gently in your hand -with your other hand on the underneath of its belly follow down a straight line-u will feel boney part. now start at the tail and u will feel a v alittle above the tail feathers. if u can fit ur pinky between the open part of the v its said to be a female. it the bones are so close together u cant fit your pinky tip between them its a male. also u can send away for a free DNA kit where u use a very small amount of blood <they tell u to clip a nail just to get a pin drop of blood>and send it back for a fee of 39.99 each bird (i think that's how much it is).

Are parakeets color blind?

NO.....It is believed that parakeets can see in color just as humans do.

All members of the parrot family are able to see in colour. The males are more colourful in order to attract the females. Also, they can see the bright colours of the flowers on which they often feed.

When do baby parakeets get feathers?

It usually starts 'pin' feathers after 3 weeks. After about 4-5 weeks the bird will be fully feathered. Also, after about 6 weeks they are ready to leave the nest.

If it is young and you are talking about feather plucking etc. or you cut it's wings and want to know when they will grow back... a bird will molt in Spring (just after winter, to rid itself of extra feathers), they only molt once a year, if you have cut the wing, it will molt and grow back once a year.. however if the feather has been pulled out, it will immediately start growing back..

What is a parakeet's cere?

It's the little colored band above their beak with the two little holes in it. You can tell a male and a female apart by the color of the cere once the birds are older. The cere will be blue if it is a boy and pinkish brown if it is a girl. The colors will change often when they are under 6 months old, but when they are about that age the color will settle. A cere is the nose

Why does my parakeet chew on his cage?

Sandy perches are not good for parrots' feet! As a matter of fact, sand or sandpaper covered perches can actually produce sores on parrot's feet. Parakeets love to chew, especially wood. They will do this to sharpen their beaks or out of boredom. Try placing wooden toys around the cage. Also, try small "foot" toys - loose wooden toys that you place on the bottom of the cage that they can pick up and throw or carry around. If the problem persists try replacing the wooden perches with sand covered hard wood perches.("Sandy Perches") These are also good for the feet, beak, and claws.

Why won't my parakeets let me pet them?

If your female parakeet pecks at you when you pet your male this probably just means that she is feeling protective of the male this does not mean that she likes you any less this is in fact a very good sign.

Can parakeets eat chips?

Definitely not. They are too high in salt and fat.

Food processed for humans should never be fed to birds as it is extremely harmful to them. Bear in mind that birds are smaller than humans, so it takes less to kill them.
One chip to a bird is the equivalent of 20 chips to a human.

There are great articles available online which give some useful advice about bird food and treats.

Why is your budgie screeching?

Hi, My 10 month old male budgie has started screeching and shouting in the mornings, we usually let him out but however when he does come out he continues, first i thought that this was a phase and that he would grow out of it very soon but this has been going on for months now. He has perfect health and is very fit for a bird. I just cant quite understand why he is shouting? For a couple of days now we have put him in a different room to calm down but he still continues. I just want to know if there is anyway of stopping this and why he is doing this? Recently i have also took away a few of his toys, one being his favorite, only because he was mating with it. I had read online about all of this stuff and i am still stuck with what to do. I would just like him to stop screeching and just to calm down, sometimes his screeching can go on for hours on end. I am trying to get him a new toy and lower his hormone levels so he calms down a bit. I do need a bit of help on how to do that also. Thankyou and i would really appreciate it, if u could help make him stop screeching!
