Leroux is not specific about the deformity. He says that Erik was born this way. His skin is sallow, and he has no nose. As a young man, Erik traveled with a carnival as a walking dead man.
I read it when i was about that age and i found it to be a wonderful story. As far as i can remember there is nothing inappropriate, anything scary in it is more hinted at than described in detail. but if your concerned i suggest you read it first before you let your child read it, or if your young and not sure then get an adult to read it for you. its a really easy read so wont take anyone long.
