Knowledge about pie in various civilisation?

Ancient civilizations knew that there was a fixed ratio of circumference to diameter that was approximately equal to three. The Greeks refined the process and Archimedes is credited with the first theoretical calculation of Pi.

In 1761 Lambert proved that Pi was irrational, that is, that it can't be written as a ratio of integer numbers.

In 1882 Lindeman proved that Pi was transcendental, that is, that Pi is not the root of any algebraic equation with rational coefficients. This discovery proved that you can't "square a circle", which was a problem that occupied many mathematicians up to that time. (More information on squaring the circle.)

What is fruit crumble?

A crumble is a freebased dessert with a crumbly topping called a streusel that's a mixture of flour, butter and sugar -- plus optional flavorings like cinnamon, vanilla extract, lemon zest or nuts -- that is baked until crisp. The flour, butter and sugar are combined until they form crumbs; some people like to add oats or nuts to the mixture.

Apple crumble is traditional, but you can make a crumble out of rhubarb, blackberries, plums or just about any fruit. A crumble is delicious warm or cold, plain or accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream, heavy cream or custard.

The crumble is said to have been invented in Britain during World War II, when food rationing made pie crusts an impossibility. Americans sometimes call the crumble a crisp.

Your mother is looking for a half pie pan to bake a pie does anyone know where to get this?

Yes, there is a "half-pie" pan. I bought several a few years ago at Kitchen Connection and I really use it a lot. I cannot find it on-line now. Perhaps it has been discontinued.

Mine is a 10-inch pie pan with an insert that covers "half" the pan. I can make a double crust pie easily, even with a lattice top. I took some photos of my recent "half rhubarb " pie, but I cann see how to attach it to this link. Hope the description helps.

What is pie helix?

MS says :First of all.......... it is pi-helix and not pie-helix....(how much i knw)

The pi helix is an extremely rare secondary structural element in proteins. Hydrogen bonds within an pi-helix display a repeating pattern in which the backbone C=O of residue i hydrogen bonds to the backbone HN of residue i+5. Like the 3.10 helix, one turn of pi helix is sometimes found at the ends of regular alpha helices but pi helices longer than a few i, i+5 hydrogen bonds are not found. The infrequency of this particular form of secondary structure stems from the following properties:
  • the phi and psi angles of the pure pi helix (-57.1, -69.7) lie at the very edge of an allowed, minimum energy region of the Ramachandran (phi, psi) map.
  • the pi helix requires that the angle tau (N-CA-C') be larger (114.9) than the standard tetrahedral angle of 109.5 degrees.
  • the large radius of the pi helix means the polypeptide backbone is no longer in van der Waals contact across the helical axis forming an axial hole too small for solvent water to fill.
  • side chains are more staggered than the ideal 3.10 helix but not as well as the alpha helix.

First of all, it's FATTENING, that's what it IS! LOL I believe it starts out with a crushed oreo-cookie crust, then cookies and cream ice cream, then a layer of mocha fudge, topped with whipped cream, chopped almonds, drizzled with chocolate fudge sauce, and sprinkled with shaved chocolate. It's a heart attack waiting for a place to happen....and if you eat more than one of those in a life time, it probably won't wait too long. lol
