Polar Bears

Known scientifically as Ursus Maritimus, the polar bear is native to the Arctic Circle, and is the world's largest carnivore species found on land. It is classified as a vulnerable species, with 5 of the`9 polar bear subpopulations in decline. They have a reputation as the only animal that actively hunts humans, but in fact, anything they encounter is potential prey.

Do all bears hibernate in winter?

Bears hibernate during winter, but aren't sleeping the whole time. Hibernation for bears simply means they don't need to eat or drink, and rarely urinate or defecate (or not at all). There is strong evolutionary pressure for bears to stay in their dens during winter, if there is little or no food available. But bears will leave their dens on occasion, particularly when their den gets flooded or is badly damaged.

Weather does play a role. In the colder, northern parts of Alaska, bears hibernate about 7 months of the year. Bears in the warmer, coastal regions of the state hibernate for 2-5 months, with the longer hibernation time for bears raising newborn cubs.

Does a polar bear live in the Arctic?

Puffins live in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean; breeding colonies in Britain are mainly on north and west coasts. Well-known colonies on Skomer Island (Pembrokeshire), Bempton on Humberside and Portland Bill in Dorset.

They live in open sea, grassy cliff-tops and islands, boulders at the foot of steep cliffs.

When do polar bears leave their mothers?

Bears stay with mama bear for 2 years. Brown bears put the 2 year old bear up a tree and leave them there. Eventually the young bear crawls down the tree and is on his/her own. I am not sure how polar bears do this to force the 2 year old to leave "home."

Do polar bears give birth or lay eggs?

Bears give birth to baby 'cubs' usually 1, 2 or 3 cubs to a litter.

How do polar bears use berries and leaves?

Not much. Contrary from all the other bear species, the polar bear is almost entirely carnivorous. Mostly out of necessity, not much grows in the high arctic and nothing grows on the polar ice cap, which is where the polar bears live.

How does the female polar bear escape the cold?

They can't escape. They depend on their thick fur and black skin to survive and live on fat from the seals--and sometimes small whales and walruses--that they kill and eat on.

Quite frankly, polar bears actually thrive and live for the cold. They would much rather escape the summer tundra than the cold winter of the Arctic.

What are the dangers of polar bears?

Polar Bears are very vulnerable to climate change and human hunting. Due to their sheer size, they have no natural predators except themselves. Large males have been known to kill off younger/smaller bears to cut out on competition. Man has been hunting these giant carnivores for centuries for its skin and fur. As of now, approximately 20000 to 25000 animals exist in the Arctic wilderness. Their numbers are steadily declining due to habitat loss and hunting. Oil and Gas exploration in the Arctic too is a significant cause for the decline in Polar Bear numbers. Due to human activity and global warming, the ice caps are melting. So, the effective land that the bears have for hunting is coming down. Pollution too is killing off prey species. So, everything put together is endangering the species.

How quick does a polar bear's heart beat?

The average resting heart beat rate for adults is 46 beats per minute. But it can drop as low, or "slow", as 27 beats, on average. Usually for the adult female during the "winter sleep" while she is denning in order to give birth to cubs for that season. For more details please see sites listed below.

Would a polar bear make a good pet why or why not?

Yes, you can have a polar bear as a pet if you are responsible and have enough money to give it the habitat and food it needs. You also would need a license if you were going t own a polar bear.

How can the polar bear survive in the Arctic?

Easily, they have an insulating fur coat, and then blubber underneath that.

Is a polar bear prey to anything?

The polar bear has no actually prey but some polar bears have been known to have been killed bye killer whales and Greenland sharks. Sometimes there has been the polar bear preying on them!!!

Small cubs are preyed on by adult polar bears. Humans are pretty much the only other real issue. They can and do hunt polar bears. This is the reason their population went down many years ago to dangerously low levels. The limits on hunting allowed them to regain population.

How does a polar bear protect itself?

Polar bears are very strong.

They have large teeth and claws with an excellent sense of smell.
thick coat plus a thick layer of fat protects them from cold teeth, claws and sheer mass is good for defending yourself although I cant think of any natural enemies they have...
blend in the snow
b being bigger than anything else in the arctic
They protect themselfs by growing thick fur, and long, sharop claws.(and teeth)
they use their teeth
They fight with their sharp teeth and claws

Why is a polar bear good at catching a seal?

  • 1. They need the food.
  • 2. They need to eat the fat from the seals so they can survive and not freeze.
  • 3. They like to eat the fat off the seals.
  • 4. Polar bears need about 4.4lbs of fat per day to survive. The fat gives them enough energy to be able to withstand subzero temperatures. An average weight of a ringed seal is around 121 lbs. If a polar bear catches one and eats the whole thing it will have about 8 days of energy. They will not need to eat or hunt in those 8 days.
  • 5. Polar bears also like to eat seals because in the spring the seals have their pups. That means that they can teach their cubs how to hunt the seals without endangering the cubs.
  • 6. A polar bear can catch seals really easy.
  • 7. They're carnivores.

How do polar bears affect the environment?

Environmental change is affecting the polar bears because of the melting of the polar ice caps and the increasing temperatures. The melting of the ice caps will give the polar bears a lack of habitat and also no place to hunt for pray. And they are evolved to the cold weather so therefore Global warming will cause them to become extinct ! .. Poor Polar bears .

We can reduce this chance by walking or cycling instead of driving a personal car. and if it is to far to walk or cycle take public transport. we can also do this by using renewable energy sources such as solar, tidal and wind power. And not use fossil fuels like gas, oil, petrol etc

There is no tangible evidence of the ice cap melting any more than normal. In the Arctic summer it recedes, then refreezes in winter. The polar bears are not becoming extinct, their population is actually increasing in some populations.

What do polar bears do at night?

Live. Hunt (and sleep) remember that polar bears live where there may be "night" (no sun) for several months running!

SLEEP

How does a polar bear eat?

Mostly, they fish. Not mush else to add to this question.

They mainly feed on ringed and bearded seals. Also, depending on where they are located they may scavenge on various whale carcases.

Are there polar bears in Ohio?

It would be highly unusual to see a bear in the wild in the state of Illinois. However, the American black bear in the nearby Appalachians and Ozarks is occasionally known to leave its preferred forest environment in search of food.

How long do polar bears stay with their cubs?

Cubs stay with their mothers for two to three years.
For a couple years at the most.

Where would one find a polar bear?

Polar Bears are becoming endangered so, Polar Bears can be spotted at the local zoo or in the natural land in the icebergs of Alaska and Canada. Their habitat is melting so there have become less and less of them.

Where did the short faced bear live in the ice age?

Do polar bears use their right hand or their left hand?

Animals, just like us humans, tend to use one hand over the other. I have done some research and have found that they tend to be Left handed, or Left pawed. lol I am left handed, what a coincidence!

Do polar bears molt?

Yes, a Grizzly Bear does experience a full molting of their coat/hair annually. The time of year the molt takes place depends to a large degree on what sex the bear is, the age of the bear, and the region or area it inhabits. So to describe a Grizzly Bear by it's color is not reliable considering that the color will, and can change for several months while the bear is molting and the sun can bleach the hair in between the annual molting. For more details, please sites listed below.

Why are polar bears labeled endangered?

Global warming causes the ice in the polar bears' habitat, the Arctic, to get thinner, rupture, and melt. Swimming conditions then become more difficult, food (seal) becomes scarcer, and reproduction rate decreases.

  • Global warming is melting the sea ice in the Arctic.
  • Polar bears rely on long winters of frozen ice to hunt seals (in dens under the ice).
  • They need good reserves of food (blubber) to last them through summer when they can't hunt seals.
  • Winters are getting shorter and the ice is melting earlier.
  • Bears are weaker and summers are longer, so some move to land and scavenge in rubbish bins.
  • Weaker female bears can not bear and raise cubs successfully.
  • We are burning the oil and coal that is causing global warming. We have to change to renewable energy!
Pollution - Man made toxic chemicals such as PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyl) and DDT (Diclorodiphenyltrichloroethane) move along the food chain up to the polar bear. Krill that have these chemicals are eaten by fish, then by seals, then the seal is eaten by polar bears. Since the polar bear is at the top of this food chain, they receive the highest amount of these chemicals in their body.

Disease and Parasitism - The trichinella is commonly found under the blubber of seals, the polar bear's main prey. After the polar bear eats the seal, this parasitic roundworm can get too close to the heart or cause severe pain under the bears muscle tissue, it could result in death.

Hunting - Many natives in the arctic kill polar bears for food, clothing, or handicrafts. Other times polar bears are killed in protection of property or in self-defense.
With a vulnerable population of over 20,000 animals, the polar bear is currently not an endangered species. With new restrictions on trophy hunting, the great ice bear's numbers may continue to rise.
