How many species of polar bear are there?
A U.S. Geological Survey of May 2008, scientists stated that the current population was estimated to be at more than 20,000 polar bears world wide. They stated that the populations were on the decline in Canada's Western Hudson Bay, and Southern Beaufort Sea. Of Canada's thirteen polar bear populations, two were decreasing, four were increasing, and the rest are listed as stable.
Currently, there are around 23,000 polar bears in the wild. In 1970, there were around 8000.
The Polar Bear population is difficult to survey. Their constant movements over ice floes, without territory boundaries and the harsh living conditions makes birth and death record maintenance an extremely difficult task.
The working estimate used by biologists is (2012) between 20,000 and 25,000 total Polar Bears.
They range across the borders of Alaska to Russia, from Canada to Greenland, and into Norway's Svalbard archipelago. It's believed that 60 percent of these Polar Bears live in Canada.
They are listed as "Vulnerable" according to the IUCN Red List. While the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Endangered Species List has them listed as "Threatened". Russia and Canada have also listed the Polar Bear as a "Species of Concern".
Recent studies show a 22% decline in populations in the Canada's Western Hudson Bay populations, since the early 1980s.
There are many studies completed and ongoing into the survival of this species. For more details, please see the sites listed below.
Latest estimates are between 23000-25000 animals.
Well sir, there are 3 polar bears in the world. These money loving jackweeds who give pollution to the world ultimately melt the polar ice caps. The polars bears live on da' ice caps. There was once 4 billion ca-zillion polars on this planet but now there are only 3. Make that 2, one just drowned. :)
The population is around 23000 to 25000.
The total population is around 25000.
The current population of the polar bear is around 20,000-25,000.
absolutely none (true)
25,000
there are roughly 5000 polar bears in the wild
Twenty to twenty five thousand.
Around 25000.
about 10 poler bears that have to mate
What are things that are made out of polar bears?
To be honest, there is isn't as much compared to lion, tiger, cheetah, etc. But I do know the famous one which is illegal today is polar bear carpet. They take out their inner body, clean it, and some southerners still have it in their homes today.
How large do polar bears grow?
Adult male polar bears grow to be about 770-1500 pounds and 7.9-9.8 feet long. Adult female polar bears grow to be about 330-550 pounds and 5.9-7.9 feet long. The largest polar bear ever recorded was 2,210 pounds.
Are brown bears polar bears because of the ice age?
No, polar bears are always white. However, the white coat usually yellows with age.
How many polar bears are left 2012?
There are 20,000-25,000 polar bears left in the world, acording to scientists
What is the adaptation of polar bears having white fur?
A behavioral adaptation of polar bears is that they eat only meat because there are no plants in their environment. Structural adaptations are that they can blend into the snow, and have feet that allow them to walk on snow easily.
Where do polar bears build their dens?
The female Polar Bear when pregnant will enter a den to have cubs, and stay there until they are born.
On cold days they may dig a hole, curl up and even cover their nose with a paw. On warm days, they pant, may sleep anywhere in almost any position, and may be sprawled out with unfurred foot pads waving in the air, looking more like a jellyfish than the ultimate arctic carnivore. Also, in the dark winter, they may burrow into the snow to help keep warm. In the summer, they may burrow into the earth to get away from the sun and keep cool. Sometimes they'll hide from the wind behind an ice wall or something similar
What adaptations do polar bears have living in the mountains?
I don't think that polar bears live in mountains, but I think the hollow hairs that they have contain oxygen which they heat up and use to keep themselves warm. Their seemingly white coats are for camouflage when they're hunting in the snow and the big teeth and claws used when hunting prey. They also have sticky pads on their feet to stop them slipping on ice and they have evolved to walk on all fours so that their mass is distributed evenly over the ice so that they don't fall through it.
How can people save polar bears?
all that stuff on tv is so fake... the photographer got super lucky finding a place where the ice was actually melted. there's a lot of money in the sad photography business. lol. global warming is fake, climate change is real. humans haven't destroyed the earth, there was an ice age before humans... clearly, climate changes are inevitable. the polar bears will be just fine, so smile (:
it can live up to 34 years also it can be 100 years old if it could survive that long. it depends on who old it already is
Do polar bears like each other?
Of course, yes! When they are hunting, they might have to put up a fight with the prey! Or they may fight with other polar bears (see the question, do polar bears fight other polar bears, for more information).
Where does a young polar bear live?
The Polar bear (Ursus maritimus) lives primarily on arctic coasts, islands, and adjacent sea ice of Eurasia (Norway & Russia), North America (Alaska, Canada), and Greenland (a Denmark possession).
Since the Polar bear is a marine mammal, it can be found mostly on sea ice or frozen circumpolar coastal regions. There are also Polar bears in captivity, like in the Zoo or a Sanctuary. These are usually polar bear cubs found without a mother and would have died in the wilderness unless brought into a Zoo or another safe place where it can be cared for.
Habitat: Arctic tundra and woodlands along the coasts and inland streams and lakes of Alaska and Canada in North America, also Greenland, Norway and Russia.
The Polar bears are considered to be vulnerable, not endangered (2011).
For extra points: There are no Penguins in their habitat area, and there are no Polar bears in Antarctica.
In the northern polar regions of the world, and in zoos. There are no polar bears in the southern polar regions.
They leave in Alaska, Canada or tundra.
The polar bear's natural habitat is in the Arctic, on land and on the ice. Climate change has resulted in a serious decline in polar bear habitats, so many of the bears are either dying or being forced into captivity.
Polar bears live in Alaska, Russia, Norway, Greenland, and Canada. Polar bears can also be found in zoos all over the world.
Is a polar bear stronger than a grizzly bear?
The largest bears on the planet are found on Kodiak Island, Alaska. They are Kodiak Brown Bears and they are hugh. I lived on Kodiak island and have seen many of them in the wild. They are magnificant to watch from a distance. Yes they are stronger than a grizzly. The grizzly is the inland brown bear, same species, different race.
In addition:
Kodiak bears are the larges sub-species of brown bear. They are about the same size as polar bears.
Do all bears hibernate in winter?
Bears hibernate during winter, but aren't sleeping the whole time. Hibernation for bears simply means they don't need to eat or drink, and rarely urinate or defecate (or not at all). There is strong evolutionary pressure for bears to stay in their dens during winter, if there is little or no food available. But bears will leave their dens on occasion, particularly when their den gets flooded or is badly damaged.
Weather does play a role. In the colder, northern parts of Alaska, bears hibernate about 7 months of the year. Bears in the warmer, coastal regions of the state hibernate for 2-5 months, with the longer hibernation time for bears raising newborn cubs.
Does a polar bear live in the Arctic?
Puffins live in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean; breeding colonies in Britain are mainly on north and west coasts. Well-known colonies on Skomer Island (Pembrokeshire), Bempton on Humberside and Portland Bill in Dorset.
They live in open sea, grassy cliff-tops and islands, boulders at the foot of steep cliffs.
When do polar bears leave their mothers?
Bears stay with mama bear for 2 years. Brown bears put the 2 year old bear up a tree and leave them there. Eventually the young bear crawls down the tree and is on his/her own. I am not sure how polar bears do this to force the 2 year old to leave "home."
Do polar bears give birth or lay eggs?
Bears give birth to baby 'cubs' usually 1, 2 or 3 cubs to a litter.
How do polar bears use berries and leaves?
Not much. Contrary from all the other bear species, the polar bear is almost entirely carnivorous. Mostly out of necessity, not much grows in the high arctic and nothing grows on the polar ice cap, which is where the polar bears live.
How does the female polar bear escape the cold?
They can't escape. They depend on their thick fur and black skin to survive and live on fat from the seals--and sometimes small whales and walruses--that they kill and eat on.
Quite frankly, polar bears actually thrive and live for the cold. They would much rather escape the summer tundra than the cold winter of the Arctic.
What are the dangers of polar bears?
Polar Bears are very vulnerable to climate change and human hunting. Due to their sheer size, they have no natural predators except themselves. Large males have been known to kill off younger/smaller bears to cut out on competition. Man has been hunting these giant carnivores for centuries for its skin and fur. As of now, approximately 20000 to 25000 animals exist in the Arctic wilderness. Their numbers are steadily declining due to habitat loss and hunting. Oil and Gas exploration in the Arctic too is a significant cause for the decline in Polar Bear numbers. Due to human activity and global warming, the ice caps are melting. So, the effective land that the bears have for hunting is coming down. Pollution too is killing off prey species. So, everything put together is endangering the species.
How quick does a polar bear's heart beat?
The average resting heart beat rate for adults is 46 beats per minute. But it can drop as low, or "slow", as 27 beats, on average. Usually for the adult female during the "winter sleep" while she is denning in order to give birth to cubs for that season. For more details please see sites listed below.
Would a polar bear make a good pet why or why not?
Yes, you can have a polar bear as a pet if you are responsible and have enough money to give it the habitat and food it needs. You also would need a license if you were going t own a polar bear.
How can the polar bear survive in the Arctic?
Easily, they have an insulating fur coat, and then blubber underneath that.
Is a polar bear prey to anything?
The polar bear has no actually prey but some polar bears have been known to have been killed bye killer whales and Greenland sharks. Sometimes there has been the polar bear preying on them!!!
Small cubs are preyed on by adult polar bears. Humans are pretty much the only other real issue. They can and do hunt polar bears. This is the reason their population went down many years ago to dangerously low levels. The limits on hunting allowed them to regain population.
