Praying Mantis

Male and female praying mantis's act quite different. The females eat constantly to create the eggs inside her body and to support herself. Females cannot fly very well if any at all. On the contrary, males are capable of flying, and they search for females to mate with. They eat smaller bugs occasionally, but really not that much. i have heard from several sources that they will eat liquified friskies cat food, but live insects are best. i also feed mine fruit

well if it is not an adult it might be getting ready to molt (shed skin)so take out all food as the live food may eat the mantis during molt. if its an adult it might be getting ready to lay eggs or it might be dieing

We watched a Praying Mantis consume almost all of the leaves of our dwarf Citrus Tree, orange. Almost no leaves are left. Upon our research, we found that they will take control over a tree from other Praying Mantis. We now have many Praying Mantis in our yard, but they do not seem to consume the leaves as this first Praying Mantis. We do not know why.

They are timid and do not appreciate being moved from tree to tree, as this takes them away from the Tree or bush they have adopted as their own. We understand that some Praying Mantis will protect their adopted tree or bush, correct?

Anyways, all is well now with the Citrus Trees. When we had a Patio Cover in the yard and grew vegetables around the Patio Cover, they would eat these leaves also. You could watch them consume a large leaf a day.

Yes, the female can lay infertile egg-sacs. Generally, if one has owned a mantis for a very long time, say 2 months or so, with no contact to male specimens or the outdoors, then she is most likely infertile. Usually they lay eggs about 1-3 weeks after being fertilized.

Yes I found one in Gladstone Michigan never seen one here before today 9/13/2011 It landed on my neck couldn't believe my eyes. Cool Bug hope to see more.
