Can a praying mantis kill a dog?

Praying Mantis's do have sharp hooks on their front legs. I doubt one could blind a dog. But perhaps, if the dog got too close, and nuzzled his eyeball up close, and the Mantis got him really good, some permanent damage could be done.

Otherwise I HIGHLY doubt it.

But don't let your dog eat the poor bug....XD

Mantids should be fed at least every 2-3 days. Younger mantids eat more frequently than older ones. They will not eat dead insects. Depending on the size of your mantid, live crickets, meal worms, house flies, and fruit flies are good prey choices.

If you keep a few live prey insects in their container you can observe how often your mantid prefers to eat.

The egg case can be moved, but not the individual eggs. The only way to even retrieve a sample of an egg that is dead will be to cut the egg case open and they are hard to remove, for they're more tightly packed than honeycomb. To move an egg case however, either remove the surface that it's on from the plant etc. or simply slip a thin knife behind it and it will peel off.

No. It is not illegal to keep, kill, touch, collect, or in any way harm a praying mantis in the United States. They are not endangered, nor are they even that rare in most areas. In fact, the Praying mantis found in much of the United States is actually an invasive species from Europe introduced in 1899. There is a common Old Wives Tale that the praying mantis is protected and cannot be killed, but this is not true. The only occasion in which it would be illegal to catch or kill a mantis is in a Narional Park or other protected land where all the wildlife is protected. For further information, consult the Snopes page on praying mantises.

Are praying mantis producers consumers or decomposers?

A producer (also known as an autotroph) is an organism that is able to make complex chemical compounds (i.e, food) from sources of energy in the form of light or heat. Plants, which use sunlight, or tube worms, which use heat from deep sea vents, are examples of producers.

A first level consumer (also called primary consumers) gain their energy from eating producers. This category includes herbivores such as deer, elephants, horses, etc.

A second level consumer (also called a secondary consumer) gains it's energy through predation, or the catching and eating of other animals. Praying Mantids fall in this category. Mantids eat mainly insects, although they have been known to eat small amphibians, reptiles, and even the occasional hummingbird.

A decomposer is an organism that gains it's energy from dead or rotting material. Since Praying Mantids eat primarily live prey and not pre-dead carcasses, they are not considered decomposers.
