Proper Addressing

Part of me is tempted to say the inside....but it is the outside of course, the opposite side to the gummed flap.....I am tempted to ask what planet you have been living on when you do not know this.

There is no real specific way to do it.

You could write, if his name is for instance François :

"Mon Cher François", "Cher François", "Très Cher François"

or more specific "Mon Cher Petit François" (Dear little ...)

In correspondence, addressing a married couple is :

" Mr and Mrs John Smith "

- the first name of the husband is the only one used.

It is incorrect to address a letter to a married woman as

" Mrs. Mary Smith. " A married woman traditionally takes

the name of her husband and so a letter to her would

properly read, " Mrs. John Smith."

If it is a formal letter or to a person at a company then obviously you should know the surname (could be lots of Diane's in one company). If it is a informal letter then if you have the FULL address it should get there. The postcode system is pretty accurate in the UK and will identify the address to around 20 buildings but you need the house/flat number to make sure it gets to the correct one.

If they use the same surname:

Drs. Jones

If they use different names:

Drs, Jones and Smith.

Esquire is a (now old fashion/'proper' as my Mum would say) of addressing a gentleman on the envelope. You don't use any title so it is David Smith Esq. rather than Mr. David Smith, the letter would then use the salutation 'Dear Mr Smith'. Should only be used with full names, ie D. Smith Esq is NOT correct. If the person has another title (Dr/Sir) etc again use that and drop the Esq.

No you do not need to capitalize all letters, but the rank typically is in all caps on correspondence. I have been in the Army many years and have always gotten the mail no matter the font or Capitalization.
