The Harlem Renaissance took place in the neighborhood of Harlem, located in Manhattan, New York City. This cultural movement occurred in the 1920s and 1930s, and was characterized by a flourishing of African American art, literature, and music.

Flanders, which today is part of Belgium, was an area of small towns on the northwest cost of Europe. The Flemish people raised sheep and used the wool to develop a weaving industry. The cloth they produced became famous for its quality and soon was in heavy demand. Flanders became the earliest Atlantic trading center.

When the crusaders came home with them came new ideas, math, philosophy, art, and science. This changed Europeans thinking and when the printing press was invented people could now learn to read and to think critically about their world. The Renaissance was the daughter of this and out of this came Neoplatonic philosophy and thinking. A perfect example of this is the Sistine Chapel where man is reaching for the hand of God. Man no longer needed the church and this carried over into the Enlightenment philosophy that man had natural rights from God.

Additionally, it is not accurate to say that the Renaissance was solely focused on the revival of classical art and literature, as scientific advancements and innovations also played a significant role during this period.

His emphasis on individual interpretation of scripture and the belief in salvation through faith alone challenged the authority of the Catholic Church, echoing the Renaissance ideals of questioning traditional institutions and seeking personal enlightenment.
