Does mi medicaid cover root canals and crowns?

I live in New York and Medicaid will do root canal therapy on all teeth except the molars. There are fine lines with that as if you are missing other specific anterior teeth (front teeth) in your mouth, they will actually do root canals on molars if you fit this demographic.

There is another fine line here as they will NOT pay for root canal teeth until it can be proven that there is an abscess, and this means pretty much it has to abscess at the root for Medicaid to cover the cost on the root canal therapy. Most teeth cannot be proven, as 2d radiographs don't show anything normally until the abcess at the root occurs. They will also not pay for crowns if you want to crown a root canal therapy tooth.

Waiting for an abcess to occur is not good, and teeth should never be let go till that point. It dimishes the root canal therapy success rates and you're dealing with pain and discomfort for elongated periods of time with a higher potential for tooth loss as an abcess damages the jawbone.

Do baby teeth need root canals?

Yes, sometimes baby teeth do need root canal treatment. The precise term is "pulpotomy" when the procedure is done to a baby tooth. The decision to do the procedure is based on several factors. First, is the tooth severely decayed? Second, is the useful life expectancy of the tooth more than a few weeks or months? Third, is the child in pain? Finally, will a simple filling or extraction serve the same purpose? Baby teeth are important not only for the child to chew their food, but they also function to hold spaces in the dental arches to make sufficient room for the adult teeth as they enter the mouth. The decision to perform a pulpotomy or not can have ramifications for many years after the baby tooth is gone.

Hi, I am having this problem right now. I went to my dentist, he put me on antiboitics that are stronger. In my case it is bacteria that went into the facial tissue and sinus. Not fun at all, and I look like a chipmunk. I thought that was normal until I called him. Go see your dentist, or specialist. When I went for a visit today he also opened the tooth and got whatever else was there. He said with the anitboitics it can take a few days to start going down, and a week for the swelling to go down all together.

Should you have your tooth pulled or do a root canal?

It really depends on the situation and preference. Both of these options are not a 100% fix. Pulling the tooth can cause complications where there is no supporting bone structure for the teeth beside the one being pulled. This can cause the teeth to shift and it also has a chance of changing your bite alignment. Also if you haven't had your wisdom teeth removed and for example you had a molar or premolar pulled then the wisdom tooth has room to push in and all the teeth between it and the one pulled will shift forward. This can sometimes cause complications, but also could save you spending a lot of money getting your wisdom tooth pulled as it will have the room to grow in place. If you wish to go for the root canal you will be looking at $800+ with no coverage and that doesn't not even include getting a cap or crown on the tooth. In addition there is no guarantee that the tooth would be saved. Complications can occur where the root gets fractured and there is no saving the tooth so you just threw all that money away. Personally in my experience if you come to the point where a root canal is needed, I suggest getting it pulled and save what teeth you can with fillings that aren't nearly as severe. And if you aren't to worried about your complexion in regards to fillings, I would go for one of the stronger fillings like silver amalgam. They can last anywhere from 10-30 years and they are a cheaper material.

What is the difference between getting your tooth pulled and getting a root canal?

A root canal would almost never be done on a Wisdom Tooth. But it is when they open the top of the tooth and remove all of the nerves in the roots. They leave the roots and fill them with a special material. Then they put a filling in the tooth. The tooth will also need a crown put on it to keep it healthy. Having your Wisdom Teeth removed is when they take out the very last molars in your mouth. They are called Wisdom Teeth. Very few people have room for these teeth to fit properly in their mouth. Each person has one on the top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left; four wisdom teeth. A root canal is done to save a tooth and keep it in mouth. The removal of a tooth consists of extracting it. Which is better? Depends on many factors. Can you use your wisdom tooth if you keep it? Will that wisdom tooth replace another molar that has previously extracted? The best would be to discuss it with your dentist.

What is the treatment for infected molar?

If you get an infection after a root canal, its usually called a "failed" root canal. The dentist may try it again by re-filing the tooth and then repeating the process, or simply go for the more simple (and less complicated) procedure of removing the tooth in its entirely.

How long after a root canal should a tooth be crowned?

As soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more chance there is of the temporary filling falling out and bacteria contaminating the inside of the tooth. Also, the tooth may fracture since root canal treated teeth have often been previously weakened by extensive decay.

Within a couple weeks is usually a good time.

Generally speaking, sooner is better than later.

Not getting a crown can result in the tooth fracturing, and a crown might not be possible then. Also, if the tooth with the root canal is visible when you smile, it may turn dark and diminish your smile. A crown will prevent that.

Waiting a few weeks before getting the crown is not always a bad idea, though. Allowing some time to pass will determine that the root canal was successful before investing in an expensive crown that might be lost if the tooth has to be extracted.

What can you not do after a root canal?

After a root canal, it is highly recommended to put a crown on the tooth. After putting the crown you can eat anything u want but do not forget to brush twice a day. If you didn't put the crown even then you can chew things but not very hard.

Does tooth pain require a root canal?

Not all tooth pain is treated with a root canal surgery, it depends on what is wrong with the tooth and how bad it is.

Here are some causes of toothache and a possible treatment:

1) sensitive teeth. Not much can be done about this except for using special toothpaste.

2) Tooth decay. Treated by doing a filling.

3) Abscess. Often after the abscess has been treated with antibiotics it is necessary to root fill the tooth.

4. Sinuses. Sometimes a sinus problem or infection can cause referred pain in certain teeth. Treatment focuses on the sinuses then, not the teeth.

Is a crown always needed after a root canel?

Type your answer here..once a root canal is complete the nerve is removed. thus, no nutrients etc are able to feed to that perticular tooth. over time the tooth becomes brittle and prone to fracture thus a crown is then placed on it to prolong the "lifespan" of the tooth.

Can root canal be done after a tooth has been capped?

Not necessarily. It depends on the extent and depth of the decay or fracture. If the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth, a root canal is indicated. If the decay has not reached the nerve, a root canal is not generally required.

What happens if you do not get a crown after root canal?

The reason why we dentist recommend for a crown to be placed in a root canal treated tooth is because the tooth tends to get fragile or more brittle after the treatment, as a lot of portion of the crown is lost during the procedure and as it cannot withstand masticatory
force which is applied to a tooth during the process of chewing and tearing food and in case of the anterior tooth it is not esthetically acceptable also so we advise a patient to get a crown placed after a root canal treatment

Are root canals bad for you?

The alternative to not having a root canal is quite often removal of the tooth, which I suggest is worse off than not having the tooth.

When a patient needs a "root canal", we really mean that the nerve is sick and must be removed in its entirety from the tooth, the empty space where it used to live cleaned and sterilized and finally sealed.

Without the removal of the nerve, the tooth may become infected from the inside out resulting in tooth loss, or the pain for the patient may become so acute that tooth removal is the only other option.

In summary, root canals are not bad for you.

What is a root canal filled with?

The tooth is protected by a temporary filling or crown until a permanent restoration may be made. This restoration is usually a gold or porcelain crown, although it may be a gold inlay, or an amalgam or composite filling (paste fillings that harden).

Can you smoke a cigarette after a root canal?

You should never smoke cigarettes under any circumstances. They are one of the leading causes of cancer and heart disease in the world. Sorry, but that statement above is akin to telling a kid who's asking about condoms that they just shouldn't have sex. I just had a root canal and asked my Dr. if I could smoke (it's been about 40 min) and he said sure. Yes, smoking is bad for you, but I assume if you're asking, you already smoke.

Can a tooth that has had a root canal become abscessed?

A root canal procedure can be started while an infection (abscess) is present but but probably not completed until another day, and it may be quite painful. The reason it will be painful is if the infection is located in such a way that it prevents the effective use of local anesthetics. Local anesthetics do not work well in infected tissues. During the procedure, the nerve of the tooth is exposed, touched directly, and removed. Local anesthetics are extremely necessary.

Once the tooth is opened there will be a large quantity of exudate (pus) present as well as blood. In order for the root canal to be completed properly, the bleeding and the exudate need to be gone. The long term success of the root canal is dependent on this.

An alternative would be to go on a regimen of antibiotics for a few days to knock down the infection and reduce the blood supply to the infected tooth. The root canal can then be completed, and it should be a lot more comfortable.

Ask your dentist about your options.

How long does it take to treat a root canal?

A typical root canal takes about a half hour in the chair. Afterward, you may need pain medication for a day or two. Drainage from the disgusting stuff that has built up around the infected root can take up to about a week or so. You may be on antibiotics for about a week in some cases. After the drainage stops, you will see a dentist who will put a filling in the canal site. Good news - you keep the tooth and have no more agony there. Bad news - the tooth is basically dead but can remain stable for many years.
