How common is it to have to have a root canal done shortly after having a new crown?

It can happen. Removing a lot of the tooth for a crown can cause the tooth to go into "shock" and die. Meaning it needs a root canal. Or it could have been that the tooth was so decayed that it was very close to exposing the nerve when all of the decay was removed. Sometimes teeth heal themselves and other times they don't and they need a root canal. It happens occasionally.

It is not very common but it's something that can happen.

Sometimes the pulp has extentions that are close to the edge of the tooth and that don't always show on an x-ray. That is why, in these cases, the pulp might be irritated after putting a crown, therefore needing a root canal.

Does an abscessed tooth have to have a root canal?

Yes, it is possible. It happens mainly when the root canals are not cleaned properly rather debridement of the infected pulp tissue is not done properly. If pulp tissue is left behind it forms nidus for the microorganisms to form abscess.

What is trigeminal neuralga?

Trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux) is a disorder of the fifth cranial (trigeminal) nerve that causes episodes of intense, stabbing, electric shock-like pain in the areas of the face where the branches of the nerve are distributed - lips, eyes, nose, scalp, forehead, upper jaw, and lower jaw. Classic symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia include: Pain is described as lancinating - (sharp) Pain comes and goes (intermittent) Pain must be in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve There has to be triggers There is remission A diagnostic tool is the response to Tegretol (Carbamazepine) Trigeminal nerve - (V) fifth cranial nerve V1: Ophtalmic-eye, forehead and nose.1-Sensory V2: Maxillary - upper teeth, gums and lip, the cheek, lower eyelid and the side of the nose.1-Sensory V3: Mandibular - lower teeth, lower gums and lower lip.1-Sensory - Jaw.2-Motor 1SENSORY: Transmits pressure, touch, pain and temperature signals to the brain. 2MOTOR: Controls movement. Trigeminal Neuralgia pain can involve one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. A valuable clue to the diagnosis is the triggering of the pain with certain activities. Patients carefully avoid rubbing the face or shaving a trigger area. Chewing, talking, smiling, or drinking cold or hot fluids may trigger Trigeminal Neuralgia pain. Touching, shaving, brushing teeth, blowing the nose, or cold/warm breeze also may bring on an attack. http://www.tnaaustralia.org.au/

Is a dentist as qualified to do a root canal as an endodontist?

Yes, legally all general dentists are qualified to do root canals. But, IMO not as qualified as an endodontist who has gone through 2-3 years of additional training in the specialty and does ONLY root canals all day rather than once/week.

I would only let an endodontist do my root canal and similarly (but more serious) I would only let a heart surgeon do my bypass surgery.

== == All Dentists are qualified to do root canals.

Can a root canal cause ear blockage that results in not being able to hear out of one ear?

It's possible. Or it could be that your ears are making your teeth sore. Go to the dentist and have the area checked or to the doctor and have your ears checked.

A failed upper root canal effected my hearing on that side. Going to neither dentist, neurologist, EENT Specialist nor family physician ever proved useful. X-rays, MRI and CAT Scan showed nothing. Hearing tests showed some hearing loss due to ringing/buzzing in the ear which began in conjunction with the root canal. Only temporarily, after use of antibiotics, the ringing went away but returned a week later and nothing has helped since. I have lived with ear ringing for 15 years and I am certain the root canal was the cause.

shown for people that have root canals over time have a lower white blood cell count than a person with more teeth.

Yes, having a root canal can cause hearing loss; I wonder if Rush L. ever connected his nine to ten root canals, for cosmetic purposes, to his hearing loss? Read Tooth Truth by Frank Jerome, Dentist. The truth will set you free.

There is no studied or researched direct effect.

What can you do if you have a tooth ake and its the tooth that had a root canal?

If you have had a root canal and the tooth that was removed still hurts, it is probably because the entire root wasn't removed or the drilling was not packed tightly enough. If that happens, another root canal must be performed and the tooth re-packed to prevent infection.

A tooth infection left uncared for is potentially life-threatening if the infection spreads and should not be taken lightly.

Another possibility to look into is displaced pain. Sometimes the body gets confused and pain from an infection or problem in one area can be felt in another part of the body.

Does mi medicaid cover root canals and crowns?

I live in New York and Medicaid will do root canal therapy on all teeth except the molars. There are fine lines with that as if you are missing other specific anterior teeth (front teeth) in your mouth, they will actually do root canals on molars if you fit this demographic.

There is another fine line here as they will NOT pay for root canal teeth until it can be proven that there is an abscess, and this means pretty much it has to abscess at the root for Medicaid to cover the cost on the root canal therapy. Most teeth cannot be proven, as 2d radiographs don't show anything normally until the abcess at the root occurs. They will also not pay for crowns if you want to crown a root canal therapy tooth.

Waiting for an abcess to occur is not good, and teeth should never be let go till that point. It dimishes the root canal therapy success rates and you're dealing with pain and discomfort for elongated periods of time with a higher potential for tooth loss as an abcess damages the jawbone.

Do baby teeth need root canals?

Yes, sometimes baby teeth do need root canal treatment. The precise term is "pulpotomy" when the procedure is done to a baby tooth. The decision to do the procedure is based on several factors. First, is the tooth severely decayed? Second, is the useful life expectancy of the tooth more than a few weeks or months? Third, is the child in pain? Finally, will a simple filling or extraction serve the same purpose? Baby teeth are important not only for the child to chew their food, but they also function to hold spaces in the dental arches to make sufficient room for the adult teeth as they enter the mouth. The decision to perform a pulpotomy or not can have ramifications for many years after the baby tooth is gone.

Why is your cheek swollen after a root canal?

Hi, I am having this problem right now. I went to my dentist, he put me on antiboitics that are stronger. In my case it is bacteria that went into the facial tissue and sinus. Not fun at all, and I look like a chipmunk. I thought that was normal until I called him. Go see your dentist, or specialist. When I went for a visit today he also opened the tooth and got whatever else was there. He said with the anitboitics it can take a few days to start going down, and a week for the swelling to go down all together.

Should you have your tooth pulled or do a root canal?

It really depends on the situation and preference. Both of these options are not a 100% fix. Pulling the tooth can cause complications where there is no supporting bone structure for the teeth beside the one being pulled. This can cause the teeth to shift and it also has a chance of changing your bite alignment. Also if you haven't had your wisdom teeth removed and for example you had a molar or premolar pulled then the wisdom tooth has room to push in and all the teeth between it and the one pulled will shift forward. This can sometimes cause complications, but also could save you spending a lot of money getting your wisdom tooth pulled as it will have the room to grow in place. If you wish to go for the root canal you will be looking at $800+ with no coverage and that doesn't not even include getting a cap or crown on the tooth. In addition there is no guarantee that the tooth would be saved. Complications can occur where the root gets fractured and there is no saving the tooth so you just threw all that money away. Personally in my experience if you come to the point where a root canal is needed, I suggest getting it pulled and save what teeth you can with fillings that aren't nearly as severe. And if you aren't to worried about your complexion in regards to fillings, I would go for one of the stronger fillings like silver amalgam. They can last anywhere from 10-30 years and they are a cheaper material.

What is the difference between getting your tooth pulled and getting a root canal?

A root canal would almost never be done on a Wisdom Tooth. But it is when they open the top of the tooth and remove all of the nerves in the roots. They leave the roots and fill them with a special material. Then they put a filling in the tooth. The tooth will also need a crown put on it to keep it healthy. Having your Wisdom Teeth removed is when they take out the very last molars in your mouth. They are called Wisdom Teeth. Very few people have room for these teeth to fit properly in their mouth. Each person has one on the top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left; four wisdom teeth. A root canal is done to save a tooth and keep it in mouth. The removal of a tooth consists of extracting it. Which is better? Depends on many factors. Can you use your wisdom tooth if you keep it? Will that wisdom tooth replace another molar that has previously extracted? The best would be to discuss it with your dentist.

What is the treatment for infected molar?

If you get an infection after a root canal, its usually called a "failed" root canal. The dentist may try it again by re-filing the tooth and then repeating the process, or simply go for the more simple (and less complicated) procedure of removing the tooth in its entirely.

How long after a root canal should a tooth be crowned?

As soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more chance there is of the temporary filling falling out and bacteria contaminating the inside of the tooth. Also, the tooth may fracture since root canal treated teeth have often been previously weakened by extensive decay.

Within a couple weeks is usually a good time.

Generally speaking, sooner is better than later.

Not getting a crown can result in the tooth fracturing, and a crown might not be possible then. Also, if the tooth with the root canal is visible when you smile, it may turn dark and diminish your smile. A crown will prevent that.

Waiting a few weeks before getting the crown is not always a bad idea, though. Allowing some time to pass will determine that the root canal was successful before investing in an expensive crown that might be lost if the tooth has to be extracted.

What can you not do after a root canal?

After a root canal, it is highly recommended to put a crown on the tooth. After putting the crown you can eat anything u want but do not forget to brush twice a day. If you didn't put the crown even then you can chew things but not very hard.

Does tooth pain require a root canal?

Not all tooth pain is treated with a root canal surgery, it depends on what is wrong with the tooth and how bad it is.

Here are some causes of toothache and a possible treatment:

1) sensitive teeth. Not much can be done about this except for using special toothpaste.

2) Tooth decay. Treated by doing a filling.

3) Abscess. Often after the abscess has been treated with antibiotics it is necessary to root fill the tooth.

4. Sinuses. Sometimes a sinus problem or infection can cause referred pain in certain teeth. Treatment focuses on the sinuses then, not the teeth.

Is a crown always needed after a root canel?

Type your answer here..once a root canal is complete the nerve is removed. thus, no nutrients etc are able to feed to that perticular tooth. over time the tooth becomes brittle and prone to fracture thus a crown is then placed on it to prolong the "lifespan" of the tooth.

Can root canal be done after a tooth has been capped?

Not necessarily. It depends on the extent and depth of the decay or fracture. If the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth, a root canal is indicated. If the decay has not reached the nerve, a root canal is not generally required.
