I have just had one go on me, so feel in a good position to answer this.

The car had been sitting for a few months. When i started using it again, i discovered a loud rattling noise when i depressed the clutch pedal. However the clutch was still peforming well.

within about a week of very short emergancy driving only, the noise had developed into a medium level, constant rattle. Increasing in noise with the clutch depressed.

After another couple of weeks, and an essential, longer journey, The noise was quite loud all the time and i could feel vibrations through the pedal.

The other day i tried to use it again, and it died.

I expeirienced a poping sensation through the pedal as i depressed the clutch, accompinied by a rather loud high pitch squeal. I tried to continue for a bit, but found that the biteing point for the clutch had dropped considerably, meaning that the clutch was still riding slightly.

After a couple more corners to get the car back, there was a smell of burning clutch and it had become a bit grindy trying to select a gear.

I done a mechanics college course some years ago, have been tinkering with cars ever scince, and have spoken to a friend in a garage, and everything points to the thrust bearing.

1) Warm the engine to normal operating temperature, then shut it off and drain the coolant.

2) Support the engine with a floor jack and wood, then remove the front engine mount and bracket.

3) Loosen the water pump pulley bolts, then remove the belt and tensioner.

4) Unbolt the water pump and gasket. Remove and discard the bypass hose.

5) Cleanthe water pump mounting bolt threads using a wire wheel and coat them in PTFE thread sealing paste.

6) Reinstall in reverse order using a new water pump and bypass hose.

7) Fill the cooling system with _new_ coolant, then check for leaks.

this can be caused by old oil, wrong oil viscosity.or incorrect valve tappet clearences

The KV6 version of this engine was first used in the Rover 825, but it should be noted that this was a very different beast to the similarly-named power unit that would find its way into the Rover 75 and MG ZT. An insider described the earlier engine as very much a practice run, produced in an almost hand-built way - unfortunately, that led to fragility in the 825, and many power units expired before they hit the 60,000 mile mark.

take the relay out of your fuse box that is for the alarm system. no relay means no power to the alarm system, not a fix but good enough to get you by until you can find the real problem and fix it

While this may not be the answer for your specific problem, many times British electrics are unreliable. Disconnect the switch from the mounting bracket and see if it sticks without the pedal trying to work it.

Another common problem is wear, many switches have adjustments and as the plunger wears, the switch has less and less travel, eventually causing brake lights to come on unexpectedly.

Finally, it is not uncommon for debris to get into the pedal or linkage, or the return spring to come off or break, when that happens pedal travel can be restricted as the pedal will not return to the proper rest position. This is VERY BAD since sometimes it can prevent the brakes from releasing, causing premature wear, poor fuel economy or brake overheating leading to failure.

check fluid level first if too low you will have air in the system and no heat check for leak or faulty radiator cap

There is a break between the switch and the rear window. Check for voltage between the gate and the window as this is usually where the problem is. If that checks good (has voltage) then a lot of the time its the main bar on the grid has a break onit these can be fixed as dealer has replacement foil for the gris.

I would honestly just call the car manufacturer. Most of them have a customer support office, and technicians that can find some interesting things about all the vehicles they make. They usually keep records on vehicles up to 10 or 15 years back.
