Sandstorms

A sandstorm or dust storm is a weather event common in dry regions. It arises when a strong wind blows dust and sand from a dry surface. The main source of airborne dust is the drylands around the Arabian Peninsula.

Is a sandstorm and sudden or gradual change?

This wind is usually caused by convection currents (which are created by intense heating of the ground), and is usually strong enough to move entire sand dunes. Air is unstable when heated, and this instability in the air will cause the mixture of higher winds in the troposphere with winds in the lower atmosphere, producing strong surface winds.

How fast does a sandstorm move?

Depends, You have to time it to be 90% accrate First and foremost the prevailing wind speed will determine the speed at which any sandstorm moves; further the wind will have had to have reached a velocity that equals a speed capable of lifting the sand into the air. It goes that the larger and heavier the sand, the faster the wind and consequently the faster the storm. Speeds of at least 130 km/h have been recorded in Iran.

Why do the sandstorms happen?

This wind is usually caused by convection currents is usually strong enough to move entire sand dunes. Air is unstable when heated, and this instability in the air will cause the mixture of higher winds in the troposphere with winds in the lower atmosphere, producing strong surface winds. Sandstorms can interfere with travel, and sometimes obliterates entire roads, and dry, flat regions, such as parts of the western United Sates. In Kuwait, the month of April is known as 'sandstorm month'. Sandstorms that come from Northern Africa and drift across Europe are called 'Sahara Sand Storms'.

The Middle East is one of the regions most affected by dust, in the world, next to Africa. Dust or sand storms are caused by the outflow from low-pressure cells passing through a desert area from west to east. Sand storms can occur throughout the year in the Middle East, but the prime months are May-September.

Why does blower not blow on 1 or 2 does blow on 3 and 4 Ac comp kicks in on 1 or 2 but does not on 3 or 4?

Defective Resistor Pack. Can you tell us where this is located? Their was a recall on the blower relay that I was able to get a free replacement one for my 90' 626 from the dealer a long time ago . My only problems is that the relay has gone again and they wont cover it because the first one is on file that it was replaced for free. Check with the dealer and see if the recall is still valid .......its worth a phone call .........eh ? Yes it's the relays under the glove box.The problem will keep coming back UNLESS you open the hood and look at the weep holes on both sides of the wiper gutter. The one over the relays gets plugged up causing water to flow into the relays.Clean those weep holes out every oce in a while and after replcing the ones you have (expensive in my book) you should not have a problem again.

How are some loess deposits related to glaciers?

The loess in the United Sates and Europe is an indirect product of glaciation. Its sources is deposits of stratified drift. During the retreat of the ice sheets, many river valleys choked with sediment deposited by melt water. Strong westerly winds sweeping across the barren floodplains picked up the finer sediment and dropped it as a blanket on the eastern sides of the valleys.

What do you do in a sandstorm?

Take shelter wherever possible to keep from breathing the airborne particles. If caught in drifts in the open, locate an area where you can create a breathing space. If possible, move toward higher ground, and breathe through a dampened cloth.

Why is ice slippery?

There are three misconceptions. Ice is slippery not because it's smooth or because its melting point drops when pressure is increased (tennis shoes still slip the same as skates). In addition, friction melting the ice has nothing to do with the slipperiness of ice (people standing still slip).

The correct answer is that the surface of the ice has a microscopic film that is liquid-like. In a liquid, molecules are free to move around, but on the surface of ice, they move up and down. This also explains why when ice cubes are held together, they fuse. This was discovered very recently.

Is a sandstorm like a tornado?

A tornado and a sandstorm are more different than alike. Both are results of moving air, but in a tornado, the air swirls around in a tight spiral. And wind speeds are very high - well over a hundred or even two hundred miles per hour. In a sandstorm, the rapidly moving air travels in the same direction across a broad front (carrying sand with it). Wind speeds in a sandstorm have a minimum of about 10 miles per hour (to begin picking up sand) and can reach 30 or 40 miles per hour or more.
