Captain Miller made a wise decision by letting the German soldier go because this avoided revenge attacks from the other side.
If you are referring to the German sniper (shot by Pvt. Daniel Jackson [Barry Pepper]) who shoots Pvt. Adrian Caparzo (Vin Diesel) in the courtyard overlooked by the bombed out apartment with the French family, it is likely (if authentic) a Karabiner Kar 98K fitted with a scope. This is a guess however, as (if memory serves) it is a manual load, bolt action rifle, so could not have been a Walther Gewehr 43 which is a semi-automatic weapon.

It seems be very accurate (although you should not use the film as your only research if you are writing a term paper).
Veterans Gave it a Thumbs UpThe veterans of that invasion thought it did a very good job of depicting the occurrence of the invasion and combat in general. Another opinion:NO, the film is incredibly unrealistic. Yes, the cinematography is excellent BUT the story line itself is bordering on impossible. There is absolutely no chance that the American Army would risk the lives of 7 men, including a CAPTAIN and a PLATOON SERGEANT to rescue a PRIVATE. It simple did not happen and never would or will happen. Great movie though.I think you may be referring to when they are saved by the jets flying overhead and Miller says "Angels on our shoulders."
The scene in which the Americans and British invaded Normandy beach was based on an actual historical event. The layout of the machine gun nests as well as the anti-tank obstacles was accurate, however the characters themselves and exactly what happened in the beach scene was not historically accurate.
As the aphorism says, "There are no atheists in foxholes". That means that when a person is faced with extreme stress, fear, or threat to their lives, most everyone will turn to God; e.g. there are no atheists when faced with death. More importantly, religion was much more revered in the 1940s. People in the 1940s lived their religious creeds, whether Christian or Jew (the two primary faiths in the US then). To NOT see religious beliefs portrayed in Saving Private Ryan would have removed a large indelible image of men bravely charging on despite fear...when surrounded by the blood of their comrades as it soaked the sands and turned the water's tide red.

Dear Madam,
I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln"
Yes, the brought him home. The movie starts with him at the cemetery in Normandy, wondering whether his life had been worth the sacrifice of others.

The men were resentful because special care was taken to bring him home. They all wanted to go home but it was not an option because, at that time, all soldiers were in Europe for the duration. Also, they were there to fight Nazis not rescue and babysit a "special case."
He uses a "Documentary Style" of filming where the camera is shaky and helps to disorient the viewer .
