Scientific Notation

The point of using scientific notation is to compute very large or very small numbers.

0.15 in Scientific Notation = 1.5 x 10-1

All the natural sciences. Engineers have their own notation. Mathematicians like exact values, or decimals. Social scientists are afraid of math!

Scientific notation requires that the number be written as a decimal number between 1 and 9 followed by a power of 10.

For example:

12345 = 1.2345 x 104

222.333 = 2.22333 x 10-2

and, finally:

28.5 = 2.85 x 10-1

Nine and forty-five hundredths (9.45) in standard form is 9.45 × 100
