Shaggy was on the beach playing Frisbee by himself. He didn't have anyone to play with because everyone thought he was a nerd. Scooby ran up and caught the Frisbee in his mouth on the first throw. Scooby's owners were to self involved to care about him. Scooby ran away to the beach and that is how they met.

Scooby- doo was a Great Dane. The gang picked him up at a puppy store, unlike in the new the mystery begins movie where the movie makes him look adopted which he was not. Scooby-doo's original owner was shaggy and never has changed throughout the series and movies.
