Divers breathing compressed gases at depth are themselves under pressure. For each 33 feet/10 meters that a diver descends, they add approximately 1 atmosphere of pressure to their body. When they breathe gases whilst their bodies are under this pressure, the gases dissolve into their bodies tissues.

When they ascend, the pressure is relieved, and gases are released. Provided that diver ascends sufficiently slowly, the gases are released slowly and no problems result. Dive log is simply a record of the diving experience of the individual. Sometimes they are used to prove experience, or as a requirement for qualifications. However, more often they are simply a collection of memories that divers like to reminisce over.

Every person is different but free diving requires a lot from a diver. It isn't a sport you just jump into and go. It is a progression that requires a lot of time and training. It isn't for the recreational diver. There is no right answer. It's similar to how many G's a person can stand, it comes down to how bad one wants to try.
