Four aircraft were hijacked from east coast airports. Two of these aircraft struck the two main towers of the World Trade Center (WTC1 and WTC2) in Manhattan, New York City. A third struck one side of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. The fourth is believed to have been retaken by the passengers aboard the aircraft; it crashed in a rural area near Shanksville, PA.
