Have some burning bushes dying while others are doing great. Why?

Your area is great for the azalea. I would make sure that you have a moist environment for them in a shaded area and I would recomend that you use a Mushroom compost soil to plant them in. Make sure that you mix the soils well and fertilize with Holly Tone. Azaleas love acidic conditions.

I would start by using cayenne pepper in the beds and use plenty of it. If this doesnt work I would try and find some Crimson barberry shrubs and place them in the bed.

I have just spent the morning at the garden center looking at ninebark trees. The average looks to be 10-15 feet tall 6-8 feet wide

The best time to trim a Burning Bush would be winter when it is lying dormant. But they are pretty heart and can with stand a trimming any time of year except for the hot summer months. Never trim more than 1/3 of the shrub at any time that there is folage present. This will harm the shrub and could kill it.

Taking care of a Laura Pendulum shrub is about the same as taking care of any other plant. Make sure the shrub gets plenty of water and sunlight. Trim the shrub regularly to keep it looking clean.

They will grow in full sun but prefer slight shade.

It depends where you live. In the UK they are cut for decoration in December with no problem. Te harder you cut them the longer they take to recover.

Painting the woody stems interferes with plant processes. Paint is applied as protection from any traveling bacteria, fungus, pest or virus whether or not there actually is an injury. The paint indeed keeps such pests out. But the price is interference with plant processes such as self-healing and respiration. Ultimately, the seal breaks and leaves the woody open to attack from environmental stresses and stressors. And the situation is compounded by the stresses that the seal is responsible during the time that it's intact.
