The metal it was made out of. Oneida flatware has little or not value unless it's silver. The company is in a downward spiral & has lost it's reputation as a good flatware manufacturer. Switching to offshore product to increase profit margin has destroyed this company. Sad but true.

There are a few words depending on whether you are English or American. The English would say 'cutlery' whilst the Americans may use 'silverware' or 'flatware'. Another English word is 'Canteen' (of cutlery)

It depends on what it is on, if it is gold on stainless steel or another base metal, not much, gold plating only puts a thin layer of gold on them, too little to be of any real value and requires costly removal to sell the gold. However, if it is gold plating over something like silver, it might have value, but rather for the sterling silver under the gold plating than for the gold plating.

I have found what someone believes to be a silent butler. It is tornished beyond retoration . It is marked F.B Rogers. Is it of any value. Trade mark 1883 or 1893 (not at my disposal at the moment) It has the number 171 below the trade mark. The top seems to be cooper based . My question is what is the base made of cooper or brass plated. It sands off looking like brass.

Well it would depend on the number of pieces and the condition. If the pieces are monogrammed that cuts the resale value nearly in half. If you were discussing a complete service for 12 the value would probably be somewhere between one and two thousand dollars.

It would depend upon the base metal underneath the plating. If it's copper or brass for instance then probably not. If it's a tin based alloy of some sort, maybe.
