Simple Machines (engineering)

A simple machine is a mechanical device that can help you change the force applied to help do more work easier. There are six simple machines: Wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, and screw.

Which other simple machine is a wheel and axle most like?

The lever. Wheels work the same way that a lever does in that a wheel is like the outer end of the lever...

What simple machine is a cutting plier?

Tin snips are similar to scissors - they are a combination of two wedges (the blades) and two levers (each blade and the handle it connects to) joined at a fulcrum (the hinge.)
There are many types of simple machines. Tin snips would be a first class lever, as the fulcrum(pivot) is in the middle.

Why is a shovel a simple machine?

A shovel is a lever. it has a handle, and one hand sets a fulcrum with the load set opposite the hand that is not the fulcrum. It might be argued that the leading edge of the shovel is a wedge making your shovel a compound machine, but that's cutting things fine.

What are the six names of simple machines?

A screwdriver is an example of a wheel and axle.

An axe is an example of a wedge.

Scissors are an example of a lever.

A ramp is an example of an inclined plane.

A faucet is an example of a screw.

A flag pole is an example of a pulley.

Which order of lever is nail cutter?

The main cutter or the clip is third class and the handle is of second class.

What type of simple machine is found on the head o an ax?

The axe head is a wedge, which is really two inclined planes. The handle is a lever with the fulcrum at the base, load at the end (the head) and force somewhere in between depending on where you place you're hands.

What type of simple machine is a letter opener?

There is no one simple machine that is a can opener. A can opener is a combination of simple machines:

1. Wedge,

2. Lever,

3. Wheel and axle.

What simple machines were used on the pyramids?

Quarrying

Many of the workers were involved with stonework. Without the use of jackhammers or drills, these talented specialists separated stone blocks from the earth with amazing patience. Since stone can hold under intense forces, the stones were broken by pushing them apart. Stoneworkers would, with iron or copper chisels, hammer out a chunk of rock and insert a wooden wedge in the crack. When the wood was wetted, it would expand and, if the wood was properly placed, it would break off a desirable chunk of stone.

Transport and the Inclined Plane

The Egyptians were no strangers to the transport of stone, and no doubt they found out quickly that barges were far more efficient than dragging them with human power. The quarries had a causeway, leading to the loading harbours on the Nile. The barges and their precious stone cargo were boated down the Nile River to another harbour close to the current pyramid project.

After their journey down the Nile, the stone blocks were offloaded from their barges onto a ramp built right up to the dock. This ramp, with a slope as little as 1 in 3,000 led all the way up to the pyramid. The ramp was made mostly of mud bricks .The construction of the Great Pyramids' ramp took ten years - one-third of the time it took to complete the entire project. As the pyramid grew, so did the necessity for a higher ramp, and dirt or bricks could simply be piled on top of the existing one to reach the new height of the pyramid.

Humans were the basic source of labour for these efforts. Stones would be moved onto sleds to make this long journey to the pyramid. As few as 70 or as many as 1400 men are necessary to pull a rock forward. Mosaics have shown liquid being poured on or under the rudders, because not only was friction a problem, but also the wooden rudders were catching on fireu8u! These liquids could have been oil or grease to act as a friction stopper, or milk or water to act as a flame stopper. Regardless, we know that Egyptians understood the fundamental concept of friction and sought to lower the sled's friction.

The Egyptians used animals eg. oxen to pull the stone blocks.

What is the function of simple machine?

The purpose of a simple machine is to facilitate or make whatever job you are doing easier. For Ex. A stapler uses a lever. Which is easier forcing a staple with your fingers or just pushing a piece of plastic.

What are examples of simple machines you use everyday?

Traditionally, there are six devices that have been widely accepted as the simple machines:

Inclined plane (or ramp),

Lever,

Pulley,

Screw,

Wedge,

Wheel and axle.

Related Information:

Three: the lever, pulley and screw were studied by Archimedes in the 3rd Century BC. The remaining three: inclined plane, wedge, and wheel and axle, were studied and recognized by renaissance scientists, most notably by Galileo Galilei in 1600.

There has been controversy, especially concerning the wedge (when considered a movable inclined plane), and to a lesser extent, the screw or auger (when considered a helical inclined plane). However, the screw does translate rotational force into linear force, perhaps fitting the definition of a simple machine.

More recently, there have been those who believed that the relatively modern invention, the hydraulic system, also amplifies and changes the direction of applied force, and therefore, fits more perfectly than the screw or the wedge, the definition of a simple machine and so, should be included in the list.

What are the safety rules of handling simple machines?

1 - You need to make sure that the cutting blade is taut.

2 - The cutting blade should be close to the workpiece.

3 - piece of work should be taut.

4 - the round cutting blade is adjustable.

What are the simple machines with in the Archimedes screw?

An Archimedes' screw is a screw which, when twisted inside a cylinder, raises water from a lower level to a higher level, allowing irrigation of fields.

Is a bicycle a simple machine if it is how is it a simple machine?

Not the whole part of the bike but the pedals are levers a kind of simple machine it uses the levers to apply force to the sprocket sprocket is a wheel and axle ,another simple machine, that uses gears to move the chain.

Any types of woodwork machines?

Some types of machine tools are:

  • Center lathe
  • Milling machine
  • Shaper
  • Horizontal boring mill
  • Vertical boring mill
  • Radial arm drill
  • Slotting machine
  • Cylindrical grinder
  • Gear grinder and Gear shaper

Who makes the machines that make the semiconductors for Intel?

The machines that manufacture semiconductors for Intel are primarily produced by companies like ASML, Applied Materials, and Lam Research. ASML is renowned for its photolithography equipment, particularly extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines essential for advanced semiconductor fabrication. Applied Materials and Lam Research provide various equipment and materials used in the semiconductor manufacturing process, including deposition, etching, and inspection tools. Together, these companies play a crucial role in the semiconductor supply chain.

What simple machine is a brick?

A Paper Weight

A Griddle (bricks can get pretty hot)

A Condom (drill a hole through one, insert)

A Stoning Device (although this may seem barbaric, some countries still use stoning, especially public stoning, as a punishment)

Boyfriend/Girlfriend (draw some lips on it and your set, what else could you possibly need from a relationship besides someone to make love to?)

Experience:

I am majoring in physics at UPenn (it's an Ivy League, not the state school)
