Any singer might sing in any key at one time or another. What matters is having a particular song in a key that allows the range (low to high notes of the song) to fit into your vocal range.

Some songs have the root (A if in the key of A, for example; also known as do of the do-re-mi scale) around the middle of the range of the song. Other songs have the root on a low and high octave with most of the notes somewhere in between.

I happen to be looking right now at an arrangement of "Happy Trails" that is in G, but the range goes from Middle D to high D (a fourth under the root to a fifth above). And I have an arrangement of "Unfortunate Miss Baily" in D that also goes from Middle D to high D (root on the low octave to the root on the upper octave).

So you might easily sing "Happy Trails" in A, a step higher that this copy, going from Middle E to High E. But to sing "Unfortunate Miss Baily" in A, you would be going from A to A. If you are an alto you could go from the A below Middle C to the A above. If you are a soprano and the low A is too low, the other option is to go from the A an octave higher up to the a that is a ledge line above the treble clef (in other words, really high).

If I understand what you mean, then you need to think lofty, with a big space in your throat (yawning is pretty much the perfect position). If you are a male, then use your head voice or falsetto and do a similar voice. Think legato- smooth, melodious lines.

Well. Of course every singer has a different, unique timbre and thus a different voice, but there are also specific terms relating to voice type of course. In a choir the typical setup is SATB, or Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. These can all be split up as well. Examples of different types of tenors are lyrical tenors, dramatic tenors, spinto tenors etc. etc. There are so many. You can also have countertenors, which are male singers that sing the alto part or even soprano, though this is rarer, They are effectively singing in their falsetto range. Castrati, although they no longer exist (supposedly), were men who could truly sing soprano, but were castrated prior to puberty to retain their boy soprano voices (or had medical issues in some cases). Basses are typically divided into Baritones (higher basses) and Basses, who are the lowest voice part.

Typical voice parts in a chorus are soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Sometimes there is a coloratura soprano, who often sings higher than other sopranos. There can be baritone, which overlaps with tenor and bass. There can be a deep bass or basso profundo who singer lower than other basses.

For a budding new musician, a great place to start singing is by entering classes and they will teach you professionally how to do it and how to avoid hurting your vocal cords from the very beginning. Some people like me were singing long before they got singing classes (e.g. I started singing when I was 5 and got classes when I was 13), and therefore they may already be aware of the basics of singing and may be able to reach a higher level more quickly.

Singing classes will also help you develop your own style as you'll soon realise which songs you love to sing most and how large your vocal range is. (the average range I'd say is a 2 and a half octave range, however it could be higher or lower for most people. I'm fairly lucky as I have a 4 octave range on a good day.)
