Sir Edmund Hillary

The Hillary Step, a rocky outcrop on Mount Everest, was named in honor of Sir Edmund Hillary to recognize his historic ascent of the mountain in 1953 along with Tenzing Norgay. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

He reached the South Pole on January 3rd 1958 as part of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition. He was a bit cheeky in doing that as he was only supposed to lay supply dumps for the team that was doing the actual crossing of Antarctica.

The Reserve Bank governor at the time, Don Brash, had originally intended to use a deceased sportsperson on the $5 note but could not find a suitable candidate. Instead he broke with convention by requesting and receiving Hillary's permission - along with an insistence from Hillary to use Aoraki/Mount Cook rather than Mount Everest in the backdrop.

Sir Edmund Hillary was known for his determination, courage, humility, and strong sense of adventure. He was a skilled mountaineer who achieved great success in conquering Mount Everest, and he also devoted much of his life to humanitarian work in Nepal.
