Our dog was sprayed by a skunk last night at 1:30 a.m., and made it into the house before we could sequester and wash him outside. He tracked the skunk smell through the living room, kitchen, dining room and down into the basement where he holed up in his bed. We got him into the garage as quickly as possible and washed him in a 1 qt. fresh hydrogen peroxide/2 tsp liquid soap/ 1 quarter c. baking soda mix. Mix in a bowl, not a bottle! We rubbed it in, let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinsed and washed with regular flea soap. It took the smell out of the dog immediately (wear rubber gloves to wash and toss your clothing afterward). Keep out of eyes!!

As for the house, we tossed the dog bed, opened what windows we could (cold night), lit about 20 scented candles, and Febreezed every cloth surface in the house. I also put out several saucers of vinegar and bowls of baking soda. It was brutal trying to go back to bed, but by 10 a.m., after making coffee and simmering some apples and cinnamon on the stove, the smell was unnoticeable to everyone but my husband and I. We consulted a friend who works in the fire restoration business about renting an ozone generator to get the rest of the smell out, and he recommended the peroxide mixture for every place the dog walked - he said it works just as well (but test soft surfaces first, as the peroxide could fade them). It's now 21 hours after the skunk hit, candles have been burning all day, fabrics have been repeatedly febreezed and freshened, bed sheets and comforters washed, and I can (for the most part) no longer smell the skunk. I still hit small pockets in the house where I think I can smell it, but it's so much better than I ever anticipated. Visitors cannot smell it at all.

Bottom line - open windows and doors, light strong scented candles, febreeze the heck out of your house, and get all affected clothing/beds outside. Skunk spray is an oil-based substance, so you must neutralize with peroxide. Tomato juice is a myth.

In some states it is legal to own a skunk as a pet. You can purchase a skunk from a breeder if it is legal to own them in your area. You may want to look for ones that have their scent glands removed.

When you smell skunk all the time, you smell something VERY stinky.

If you smell a skunk all the time, likely there is one living under your house and it may have gotten mad and sprayed down there. The smell will eventually fade on its own but you've still got the problem of a skunk living under your house. You must first find the hole it's living it, which will have a slight skunk smell. Then wait till at night and make sure the adult is gone and make sure there aren't baby skunks in the den. If there is, best thing to do is to put mothballs in the den, skunks can't stand the smell and the mother will take her young and leave, then seal off the hole. If there aren't babies, mothballs are still a good option but it may not work with some skunks, if its a lone skunk and mothballs don't work, get a one way doggie door and put it over the hole while the skunk is out at night or sound asleep during the day and they won't be able to get back into the den and they'll give up and leave. That's why you don't do it if there are baby skunks, because the mother can't get to her young and feed them and they'll die under your house, which will then leave you with a guilty conscious and the smell of dead skunks under your house.

The scent glands of skunks can be removed, but if you are considering this keep in mind that the scent, while blood-curdling, is the animal's natural defense. You must be completely committed to caring for the animal after you take its defense away. If you can't do that, then leave the animal alone.

In 1 litter, there can be up to 7 baby skunks. Usually there are around 4 born in each litter.

If you have a vet who is willing he/she can trank the skunk from a distance. If not, you can cover the trap with a few towels or cloths.

Place it on the trap with a long rod. Move slowly and speak in a soft voice while doing this. Talking constantly but quietly will calm the animal. Once the cloth is over one end of the trap, stop for a moment and walk away for a while. When you come back, the skunk may be hiding in that end of the trap. Talk again as you come closer. Place another cloth over the other end of the trap, again using the long rod. Once the trap is covered you can move it without to much trouble if you remember to always talk as you are approaching and moving the trap. Use gloves while moving the trap so it cannot bite you. Use cloth that you can throw away in the event of the skunk spraying within the trap. If you don't startle it, however, it will not spray.

Skunks have very bad eyesight and can be surprised when you are close if you don't talk to let it know where you are. You have a much greater chance of getting sprayed if you surprise it. If the skunk is repeatedly stamping, walk away for awhile and let it calm down. Skunks are really very mellow little animals and will allow you surprisingly close if you take care to present yourself as harmless.

Interesting animals, skunks are. They're really quite mild mannered, and if you don't startle them or make them angry, they're happy to leave you alone. All they want from humans is the scraps of food that we carelessly leave laying around. They normally eat just about anything from frogs to bird eggs to whatever they can find in your garbage can. However, nature has given them a very effective means of self defense in the spray that they direct at an enemy. The spray is a chemical concoction manufactured by special glands in the skunks body.
