There are several variations of the 657 mountain gun. these are indicated by a dash (-) and a number after the model #. The general rule is the lower the number after the dash the earlier the manufacturing date and the more valuable the gun. unfortunately it is not that easy. There many other factors that determine value and each gun needs to be appraised individually. To be very general, Model 657's values range from $500 to $1000. Mountain guns usually bring a premium.

The exact value of a used Smith and Wesson Airweight 38 SPL CTG is actually dependent upon a number of factors. Some of these things would be, exactly how used it is and the age of the firearm.

No, .38 super is a semi automatic round and .357 is a revolver round. While both have a bullet diameter of .355. The case length is different and the the tounds are held in the firearms differntly. Semi automatics have a shoulder in the barrel that holds the round in place. a revolver has a lip on the cartridge that holds it. In 1986 Ed Sanow performed a test using various .38 Super ammo on two different .357 Magnum revolvers, SW and Colt (different twist rates) and he concluded. A. You and safely shoot .38 Super in a .357 Mag revolver. (not in a .38 Special gun even if it is +p). It will fit in both guns. The Super has lower chamber pressure than the .357 Mag but almost double than de .38 Spl +p B. Even thoug the Super is semmi-rimmed it extracted reliably from both revolvers. C. The longer freebore due to the supers shorter case and the different bullet dia. did not affect accuracy. Actually the Winchester .38 Super Silvertip was more accurate through a .357 mag than all the .38 Special and .357 Mag loads shot during the test. He concluded that using a .38 Super through a .357Mag is a better alternative than using a .38spl+p. It has better stopping power. Also it is a good alternative if the muzzle blast and shot to shot times prove hard to handle with the .357.

Lock the slide back. Remove the magazine. Snap the trigger guard smartly downward. Pistol must be held horizontal during this maneuver because the barrel is now free to fall away. Lift barrel upward from the frame. Pull the slide back at a slight upward angle. Push the slide assembly forward to free it from the frame. The gun is now ready for cleaning. Reversing the procedure reassembles the Model 41. Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson states that model number stamping began in 1957 & 'J' prefix s/n's started in 1969. The s/n you ask about was made between 1973-1974. If it does not have a 'J' prefix or model # stamped then the year you state would be correct. Catalog value in 2006 was $100 (Poor) to $425 (NIB) but prices are going up fast, especially on the short barrel Smith's like yours.
