What is the shelf life for pistol ammunition?
If stored in a cool dry environment free of corrosive chemicals, pistol ammo can last pretty much indefinitely. I've heard of people using ammunition that was close to 100 years old.
2. Yes.
But in time it is found that the burn rate of the smokeless powder increases slightly, making the powder burn faster and the pressure generated inside the cartridge a little higher. Usually this has little effect on reliability or accuracy.
If the cartridge primer is exposed to moisture, or oil especially, it can deteriorate and not ignite, causing a misfire.
That said, most center fire cartridges will fire if under 50 years old.
Caliber .22 rimfire ammunition is another story as it uses a different ignition system.
Rimfire ammunition is especially susceptible to aging and may or may not fire after 15 years or so. One box of ammunition may be perfectly reliable while another may be mostly duds. This is unpredictable and depends upon the manufacturer and the ammunition brand.

What does model 637-2 mean in S W 38?
In Smith and Wesson code, the 6 means the gun is primarily made of rust resistant stainless steel. The 37 designates the lightweight version of the model 36 .38 caliber revolver, and lightweight guns have aluminum frames. The -2 designation means that this revolver is the second version of this model. So 637-2 means a stainless barrel and cylinder on an aluminum frame based on a lightweight model 36 revolver in the second version (or first design revision) of this model which is designated model 637. The model 36 and model 37 Smith and Wesson revolver are 5 shot revolvers with a 2, 3, or (recently) a 5 inch target barrel. The 2 inch barrel is the most common version. The model 637 Smith and Wesson 5 shot .38 caliber revolver is only available in a 2 inch barrel.

Best Answer - Chosen by AskerWith A Ser# prefix The Model 39-2 with A ser# began production in 1971 so you have a early 1970's gun maybe 1971.The Smith & Wesson model 39-2 9m/m semi-auto was
introduced in 1954, in the traditional double-action configuration.
It had an alloy (anodized) frame, and a carbon steel slide, 8-shot
magazine, and a 4" barrel. Since the prototype model 39-1 NEVER
existed, the sequence went from the original model 39 directly to
the model 39-2. It featuered checkered walnut grips, a serrated
1/8" front ramp sight, with a micrometer click adjustable rear
sight for windage-only. The hammer spur usually had a small
hole drilled in it, with a smooth forestrap and a stippled back
strap. S&W is stamped on the frames right side, 9mm CTG on
the extractor port; with later production models (after A160,
000) simply marked 9m/m. Weighing just 27 ozs unloaded, an
with a smooth trigger and magazine safety (which I don't like)-
its my favorite of the 9m/m class. The last S&W model 39-2
(S/N A747148) was shipped on Feburary 15, 1983; as regular
production ended it 1982.
Approximate value runs from a low of $175 (fair condition), to
a high of 'bout $400 for "As New In Box" condition. The Illinois
State Police were the first agency to adopt the S&W model
39-2, as a standard, issued sidearm for their department. Some special models of the gun can be worth thousands.
The alloy frame 39-2 was made 1970-1982
