The record for fixed wing flight is 85,000 feet.

It is like any other jet aircraft. So it needs the same space for landing. The landing strip should be atleast 1-2 km long.

They had a few reasons. Prime among them is the government decided satellites could provide all the overhead coverage you'd ever need. Satellites have a big problem: you can't put them where you need them when you need them. After they brought the SR-71 back to service, it then became a question of money. NOTHING on an SR-71 fits anything else in the fleet. If you need a new part you have to make it by hand. The fuel only works in the SR-71. The tires are special. There's no onboard datalink so there's no real-time collection capability, and that plane is so fast you could never put a datalink system on one. Now that we have unmanned aerial systems, we don't need the SR-71.

The Blackbird was the king of airplane back in those days. Only 32 were made. 12 were destroyed in accidents. It was the fastest airplane and it was no hoax. You don't have to be too smart to realise why no other country had the plane.

In development it was the RS-17, but when LBJ announced it in a speech he got a bit dyslexic and turned things around to SR-71. It kept that name.

The top speed of an aircraft is it's absolute all out speed with thrust full on. This can only be kept up for a very short while. However, the fastest fighters can go over 1,500 mph. An average jet airliner cruises at about 570 mph.

Official reports said the supersonic spyplane was being retired to save the $200-300 million annual cost to operate the fleet in favor of advanced satellite systems. The days when the blackbird to existence, modern satellites where not as good as todays satellites. An airplane that could fly closer to the earth was needed.

For a long time the Air Force claimed a maximum speed of Mach 3.2 and an operational ceiling of 85,000 feet, but we now know that the SR-71 can soar above 100,000 feet. Some military pilots claim altitudes in excess of 125,000 feet but this is probably stretching it a bit. Compared to the fastest jet fighter America had at the time, the SR-71 flew at least 60 percent faster than its maximum speed on afterburner.

The stall speed must be less than the landing speed which is 173mph (about 150 knots).

Also, as a rule of thumb, landing speed for an airplane should be less than about 225 knots since airplane tires are the limiting factor in landings and ideally one would land at the slowest speed possible without stalling.

This depends on the factory;s capability and labour force. With standard labour force it may take more than a month. With a large labour force it may take at least 3 weeks.

The SR-71 Blackbird was retired in 1989 due to the cost, as the planes would have to be refueled in flight and was costlier in upkeep compared to reconnaissance satellites. There was also a lot of secrecy surrounding the project allowed people to discredit the airplane. In 1994 congress set up $100 million for reactivation. The Air Force went against this as they wanted the money to go to different programs and in 1997 Bill Clinton did a single line veto to remove the money set up for the SR-71. This was later deemed unconstitutional but in 1998 the Air Force redistributed the funds to other programs and retired the SR-71 blackbird permanently except for the two that NASA retained. Improved technology resulted in great improvements in photos taken by Satellites. There is no risk to a crew when a satellite is used.
