I would be curious as to whether she is really having strep. Has she had typical symptoms (red swollen throat and painful swallowing with swollen glands and no runny nose or cough) and a positive culture?

About 10% of people will have a false positive rapid strep test so it is often misdiagnosed if any sore throat and a positive rapid strep are used. In her situation I would want culture confirmation and would consider a false positive if her symptoms are atypical (runny nose and/ or a cough strongly suggest it is not strep). It is possible she is just getting a series of viral infections from living in close quarters. It is also possible she has an allergy that causes a scratchy throat.

The other reason to doubt strep as the diagnosis is that the incubation period is usually about 2 weeks (range 1 to 3). She would have had to have gotten it immediately upon arrival and had a very short incubation period to have symptoms one week after getting to school.

Strep usually does not lie dormant in a location and cause repeated infections. Some people do get recurrent tonsilitis from bacteria other than strep. In this case they get red swollen throats accompanied by white patches in the throat, pain on swallowing, swollen and tender glands in the front of the neck, often a fever without a runny nose, cough or positive strep testing and the whole thing gets better promptly on antibiotics. In that case (or if it really is recurrent strep proven by culture) consultation with an ENT to consider taking the tonsils out may be warranted.

Where is the bleeding coming from? From the throat? Go and see your doctor, you could have something more serious going on. Its not normal to bleed from strep.

It can. The ears, nose and throat are all connected together by fine tubes. The inner ear controls balance. With an infection, there is swelling. Those tubes may be swollen shut and cause earache, but the general higher pressure in the area due to the strep throat can affect the inner ear and cause balance problems, which should get better long before the course of antibiotics is finished. If it isn't, see your doctor.

Strep is pretty contagious, so if you have been around someone with strep and then within days start getting a sore throat there is a good chance you now have it. I think alot of times we want to make a mental "check mark" next to each symptom of illness and if don't have all them we aren't sure we are truly sick. When we just need to realize everyone is different and our bodies all react differently to viruses and bacteria. So I would say if you have a sore throat and have recently been exposed to someone with strep I would get it checked out.

She started with not feeling well, constant vomiting and went down very fast after that and her kidneys started shutting down. She was middle-aged and otherwise in good health. Her doctors said they don't know how the strep got into her stomach.

The bubbles in the soda may irritate your throat if you have a sickness such as strept. Although, if the soda is flat, it won't do much to your throat.

Don't make it worse. The side effects of untreated strep include poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis which is swollen kidneys, scarlet fever, and rheumatic fever. It also involves a really sever sore throat with a fever and pain in the abdominal area. What I recommend is heated up tea with honey or a pain reliever called otc but most importantly drink a ton of fluids and rest a ton.

I just came home from taking my 7 and 9 yr. olds to the pediatrician. They have Strep Throat and we were told to Stay Away From MOTRIN and ADVIL. Recent studies show that the overwhelming ability of ibuprofen to reduce inflammation (immune response) makes it hard for the body to build anti-bodies to the Strep. They now believe this is why so many kids get recurrent Strep Infections. It really has nothing to do with any kind of interaction with the antibiotic.
