He was an African American, and his performance was an embarrassment more so to Adolf Hitler, than the German people. At that time, Adolf Hitler was trying to convince the world that the German people were the master race, and to have an African American beat the best in the world, didn't help the cause of the third Reich.

These two men were Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gold and bronze medalists, respectively, of the 200 meter run. They were impressed with the words of sociologist Harry Edwards who had pleaded with black athletes to boycott the Olympics to protest racial injustice in the US. So they planned a silent protest to be performed on the medal stand if they medaled in the race. Smith wore a black glove on his right hand and Carlos wore a black glove on his left hand. At the time of the national anthem they bowed their heads and raised their gloved hand in the air. Smith represented black power and Carlos represented black unity. Reaction to their protest was swift; they were suspended from the team and banned from the Olympic village. A lesser known and rarely discussed fact is that Peter Norman, the 200 meter silver medalist from Australia, also participated in the protest. While he stood at attention and faced the flags during the national anthem, he wore a badge for the Olympic Project for Human Rights, an organization of black athletes striving for racial equality in the US and around the world. Carlos and Smith, and Norman became close friends and their friendship lasted until Norman's death in 2006. Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at Norman's funeral.

Great Britain is the most successful nation, having racked up the most amount of medals since Olympic sailing started in 1900. The most successful Olympic sailor is Denmark's Paul Elvstrom. He won the first of his four gold medals at consecutive Games in 1948. However, if Great Britain's Ben Ainslie wins Gold at London 2012 he will overtake Elvstrom with one silver and 4 consecutive golds.

According to the Associated Press, there are going to be 500,000 security persons at the Games to match the number of foreign visitors expected. There are about 7-8 million tickets for the Olympics with 75% of tickets for sales in China and 25% for overseas sales - almost 2 million tickets for worldwide sales. I expect 5-10% attendance will come from US alone although I have heard reports that many athletes families cannot attend due to traveling costs. While there are many reports that tickets are selling out fast, many hotels in the area are still not at full capacity or even 75% for the Games. Many of the Chiinese must be attending.

Australia had it's highest gold medal tally, 17, at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. Swimmers Jodie Henry and Petria Thomas won the most gold medals for the 2004 team with 3 each.
