Tapirs

Questions about a giant pig-like mammal inhabiting the dense jungles of South America and Southeast Asia should be directed here. Tapirs have a small snout similar to the Elephants. They are all endangered due to excessive hunting and habitat loss. Though Tapirs may look like a pig and have snouts, they are closely related to animals like the Horse and the Rhino.

What does a tapir animal eat?

Glad that you asked.....

A tapir is an omnivore and almost everybody thinks that it's a vegetarian. But one day my friend Jeremy and I went to the Amazon Rainforest in South America and we saw a tapir hunting for several baby toucans and ate some plants so a tapir is an omnivore. So back to the question, the tapir consists a diet of berries, leaves and fruit but a tapir also eats baby toucans, banded rattlesnakes and some tapirs, fish hope this helped and I am not lying because My friend Jeremy and I actually saw a baby toucan being eaten by a tapir if you want the specific tapir type its the Brazilian Tapir HOPED THIS HELPED!

How does a tapir defend itself?

Not very well, unfortunately, which is why they are almost extinct. They generally try to run (or swim) away when threatened, and offer little resistance to predators once caught. They might wriggle around a bit, and have been known to kick an attacking tiger in the stomach, but this is likely to be more accident than an attempt at aggression. During the course of my research I was told by a Malaysian jungle guide of one mortally injured tapir who deliberately bit the ear of a hunter as he bent down to look at it, but I have no way of knowing if the story is true or not.
