The Avengers
The Avengers are a team of Marvel superheroes. They first appeared in 1963, and like so many Marvel comics, were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The original lineup consisted of Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Ant-Man, Wasp, and Iron-Man. Captain America did not appear for the first few issues when the team discovered him in the ice.

As to why they don't appear in the Avengers films:
Until recently, each Marvel superhero was treated as the only superhero in his/her world, except in crossovers and especially in the movies. It would be logistically difficult, not to mention prohibitively expensive, to assemble the entire Marvel pantheon in a single production. However, this would not preclude "cameo" appearances as occurred leading up to the breakthrough Avengers movie. In the comics, this was often provided as an aside panel to explain why one hero or group has to save the world "by themselves."

Yes, Thanos is a Titanian Eternal and is probably one of the most powerful beings in the universe. He has survived blackholes and even cosmics assaults from a lot of alien beings. He has defeated beings such as the Silver Surfer, stalemated Tyrant and even managed to hurt Galactus himself. He is one of the most dangerous being in the universe, but still not the most powerful as there are a lot of abstract beings more powerful than him, however he has managed to consume artifacts such as the Cosmic Cube, the Infinite Gauntlet and the Heart of the Universe that helped him become a God for a while.
On the other hand Superman is a Kryptonian, beings that under a yellow sun can display amazing abilities such as super strenght, speed, stamina, durability, flight among others. He could probably trade a couple of blows vs Thanos, as an angry Superman has defeated villains such as Mongul, Cyborg Superman and even Darkseid himself; but Thanos has never lost a battle, the only one he ever lost was against Drax the Destroyer, a battle in which he died.
