Both she and her best friend enter, and while she writes about life, her best friend writes what she knows will please the judges. When her best friend (Elaine) wins, Lysandra is crushed. She stops speaking to Elaine, and she stops writing.

But when she got there, she saw Brett and Lysandra dancing a slow dance together. Her heart was broken.

When Brett and Lysandra stopped dancing, he at least had the decency to go find Elaine and dance with her for the remainder of the evening, but something had changed, and they both knew it. The next day, Brett broke up with her, without giving a reason.

Lysandra knew that she had been successful with her revenge, and she began to write again. And Brett? He moved away in the fall of that year, because his dad didn't like the climate or something.
