The Secret Life of Bees

"The Secret Life Of Bees" refers to how bee's have, as August puts it, a "secret life" inside their hives that not many people know about. This is significant because Lily is leading her own "secret life"(you know, she ran away from home and hasn't told anyone the truth except the black maid.

Because lily wants to find her mother but is scared T-Ray won't let her leave when she goes and brings Rosaleen back to the house so rosaleen just goes with lily to help find her mothers history in Tiburon.

Lily ate the seeds during the vigil in "The Secret Life of Bees" because she saw the other women doing it and followed their lead. It was a symbolic and communal act that connected her to the women around her and helped her feel part of the group. Additionally, eating the seeds helped Lily focus and meditate during the vigil.

Lily is not allowed to attend charm school in "The Secret Life of Bees" because she is a white girl in a time and place where racial segregation and discrimination are prevalent. The charm school is only for Black girls, and Lily faces resistance due to the racial tensions of the era.

In "The Secret Life of Bees," Lily and Deborah are alike in their shared desire for freedom and independence. They both struggle with a sense of abandonment and a longing for love and acceptance. Additionally, they both express a deep connection to nature and find solace in its beauty and healing properties.

The novel was set in the early 1960's when civil rights were just becoming an issue.

June dislike Lily because she feels that Lily is always trying to compete with her, diminish her accomplishments, or belittle her in some way. June might also have certain personality clashes or differences with Lily that make it difficult for them to get along.

Lily is tormented by the question of why her mother, Deborah, left her when she was just a baby. Lily also wonders about her mother's past and the secrets she kept that she learns about throughout the novel.

Metaphorically, the queen bee would be August Boatwright because she touches and takes care of the rest of the family, including Lily and Rosaleen.

The internal conflict is Lilly wrestling with her motherlessness and how she killed her mother, and the external conflict is all the racism, such as with Rosaleen and Zach (if you don't know these situations, read the book!) as well as with Lilly and T-Ray, who is trying to track down Lilly.

Both Lily and Rosaleen keep a secret related to Lily's mother. Lily hides the truth about her mother's death, while Rosaleen carries the burden of knowing the circumstances surrounding Lily's mother's death.
