When he goes back for her, she is gone. It is this plot line that connects Carol Peletier (Sophia's mother) and Daryl Dixon.
In episode 7, "Pretty Much Dead Already," Shane opens the walker barn at Hershel's farm. After the walkers are all shot down, a last one walks from the barn into the sunlight, Sophia. Not wanting to, but compelled to anyway, Rick puts her down.

Ultimately the virus mutates which makes it that you can turn into a walker from dying for any reason (so long as the brain isn't damaged). This is what happened to the two Security Guards at the school where Rick and Shane were going to drop Randy off in the first place, as well as what happened to Shane last night when Rick stabbed him in the heart. In this new chapter of the series it is a nod to George A. Romero's zombie films wherein people became zombies when they died, once again, for any reason so long as the brain isn't damaged and reanimation can occur. Getting bitten in this context will simply turn you into a zombie all the quicker, but all people inevitably become one. That is in the end the biggest tragic irony of both of the stories since no matter how long you stay alive, no matter how long you starve and live in paranoia of not only the dead but also the living, and no matter how many you take out...you're going to become one!

Does hershal die in The Walking Dead?
Unfortunately, Merle does die in The Walking Dead. In the penultimate episode of the third season, Merle decides to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect his little brother, Daryl. He decides to take Michonne and deliver her to The Governor to prevent anymore deaths. However, The Governor plans to ambush the one who delivers her and take Michonne alive. Merle then frees Michonne when he has a change of heart about the plan.
Merle then heads to a bar parking lot and drinks whiskey with Fast and Loose by Motorhead playing in the car. He lures a large horde of walkers to Woodbury where The Governor and his allies stand for the deal. When The Governor's men see the walkers, they open fire which allows Merle to start shooting each of them with his M4A1 assault rifle. After killing Allen's son, Ben instead of The Governor (after walking in front of Merle's scope), Merle is attacked by a walker, which allows Martinez to beat down Merle and The Governor eventually takes him and beats him to death. After biting off two of his fingers and breaking his bayonet arm, The Governor shoots Merle in the chest and kills him.
When Daryl goes to find Merle, he confronts multiple corpses along with Ben's body, which is being eaten by a walker, better known as Merle Dixon himself. The walker Merle staggers towards his baby brother who pushes him back three times. Angry at The Governor for killing his brother, Daryl stabs Merle in the head multiple times, killing the walker and leaving Daryl to break down into tears.
Did Shane really die on The Walking Dead or was it a dream?
Shane rode off into the sunset on his horse and maybe did die, we'll never know. When we find his bones then we can let everybody know for sure when and under what circumstances he did die. Until then stay posted...

Is The Governor going to return in Walking Dead season 4?
Yes, David Morrissey is set to reprise his role as The Governor. The war that began in Season 3 between Rick's group and The Governor, will continue and hopefully end with The Governor probably being killed off in Season 4 by the finale.
