TI-83 & TI-84 Graphing Calculators

The TI-83 and TI-84 are the most commonly used graphing calculators in algebra and calculus classes. This category contains questions relating to the functionality of these models.

How can you graph x equals a number using a Ti-84 graphing calculator?

On a TI-84, press APPS. Scroll down and choose Inequalz. The calcuator will say "INEQUALITY GRAPHING" and "PRESS ANY KEY" (and some other stuff). Press any key. If the calculator says INEQUAL RUNNING choose continue. If the calulator says CONFLICTING APPS, then choose "Quit APPs listed below.

When you press Y= (you will already be in the Y= screen after choosing Inequalz), you will see a little X= in the top left-hand corner. Use the up arrow to highlight it and press ENTER to get to the X= equations.

You can only graph numbers in the X= equations; you cannot put variables in. If you do they will turn into numbers.

To turn of the X= (and the inequaity signs at the bottom of the screen), press APPS, choose Inequalz, and choose "Quit Inequal".

How do you make 'cot' and 'csc' on a TI-84 graphing calculator?

From math class, some trigonometric identities:

cot x = 1/tan x

csc x = 1/sin x

sec x = 1/cos x

There are no built-in cot or csc formulas, so use the above.

Remember that these give errors when tan x, sin x, or cos x are equal to 0.

How do you graph x equals 8 on a TI 84?

Click on "Y=" to begin graphing. In the upper left hand corner, there should be a tab that says "X=". Click the up arrow to move the cursor there. Click enter and you should be able to graph it from there! To see the graph, click on "graph". I hope this helps!

How do you solve a quadratic equation on a TI-84?

Press MATH. Then go down to the last option, which says "Solver...". Press Enter. If you do not see "eqn:0=" then press the up arrow until you do. Now type your quadratic equation in. It will automatically be set equal to zero. (Use the button to the left of ALPHA for a variable, or use a capital letter as your variable(s). Put the cursor over the value next to the variable you want to solve for. Then press ALPHA and then SOLVE (the ENTER key. Notice that SOLVE is written in green above the ENTER key.) You will get an answer. Type in other values next to the variable to solve for other possible answers. You will normally get the answer closest to the one that is next to the variable before you press solve.

How do you make the asymptotes on a graph of secant appear on a TI-84 plus edition?

Press Window and scroll down to Xres. Change it to 2. Then press GRAPH. If the asymptotes still do not appear, increase the Xres number by one until they do. (It cannot go higher than eight.)

How do you graph an equation in Ti83 calculator?

Go to the y= button, and type in your equation by the y1 (if there's 2 equations, press enter and type the 2nd one in by the y2). Then press graph.

How do you enter logarithms in a ti-84?

To enter a natural log, press the LN button. To enter a log with base 10, press the LOG button.

To enter a log with a base other than those, divide the log of the number with the log of the base, so log6(8) would be log(8)/log(6) or ln(8)/ln(6). (The ln is preferred because in calculus it is easier to work with.)

How do you do powers on a ti-84 plus calculator?

There is a button above the division sign that looks like this: ^

You type: 2^5 which means 25

How do you change the language on a ti-84?

You cannot change the language. However, many Texas Instruments provides alternatives to included applications in different languages. Unfortunately, outside of TI's applications, there are very few programs written for languages other than English.

How do you put log functions in a TI-84?

In order to find the log with a power of ten, use the LOG button. For example, to find log105, type log(5). (The parenthesis after the g will appear when you press the LOG button.

In order to find a log with a power other than ten, you will have to divide by the log10 of that power. For example, to find log82, type log(8)/log(2).

In order to find the natural log of a number, use the LN key. For example, to find the natural log of 91, type ln(91).

How do you add percent sign into TI-83 plus?

there is no percent button... just use the decimal button and then move the decimal two places down

How do you find the LCM on a ti-83 calculator?

For example, if you want to find the least common multiple of 17 and 256:

Press Math and select NUM at the top with the arrow keys. Scroll down and choose the option that says lcm(. Then type the first number, followed by a comma, followed by the second number. Put in an ending parenthesis (If you don't, it will still work, but this is good practice for when you get to more complex problems.) You should see:

lcm(17,256)

Press ENTER. In this case, the answer will be 4352.

How do you reset the calculator TI-83 Plus?

Hit the second button, it allows all the keys on the TI-83 to have a second function.

Now, hit the plus button. There should be a MEM on top of it, this stands for memory.

Now scroll down using the arrow keys to the 7th option, which says reset.

It will confirm that you want to clear the RAM. Then press YES.

Your TI-83 plus is reset.

How do you scroll the screen of a TI-84 silver edition graphing calculator?

To scroll, use the up and down arrows. If you want to scroll faster, press 2ND ALPHA and then use the up and down arrows.

How do you calculate coefficient of determination by using TI-84 Plus calculator?

Enter the data into 2 lists such as L1 and L2. You do this by going to [STAT] and hit [ENTER] on [EDIT]. After you do this then go turn on diagnostic by going to [2ND] [0] scrolling down to Diagnostic on. Then go back to [STAT], right the right arrow to CALC and scroll down the appropriate regression. Once you have chosen the right regression go to [2ND] [1][,][2ND][2][ENTER] this will give you the equation and coefficient of determination

Is there a combination button on a TI-83 Plus?

Yes. For example, if you want to calculate combination(6,2), press 6 and then press MATH. Use the arrow keys to scroll over to PRB at the top and select nCr. Then press 2. You should see:

6 nCr 2

Press ENTER.

How do you get the prime numbers with calculator?

There is no simple answer because there is no known pattern to prime numbers. You could try dividing the each number by all the prime numbers less than or equal to its square root. If none of the go into the number then it is a prime.

Inverse logs on TI-83 plus?

To get the inverse log function, press 2ND and then choose 10x. (Above LOG.)

To get the inverse of a natural log function, press 2ND and then choose ex. (Above LN.)

How do you get to list 1 on the t1-84 silver calculator?

To get to list 1, press STAT and then choose edit.

If list 1 is not there, press STAT, choose SetUpEditor, and press ENTER. Then go back and press STAT and choose edit and you should see list 1. (This will set it up so that the list editor contains lists 1 thorough 6).

What does Xmin mean on a TI-84 calculator?

Xmin is the lower limit to the graph that will be displayed. For example, if you graph something and set Xmin to 0, then the bottom of the graph will be where y = 0 (0 being the lowest x value o the graph).

(The default for Xmin is -10, where the bottom of the graph is at the line y = -10.)

What does it mean if a TI-84 plus calculator says invalid dim?

If you are trying to graph something, it is probably because a stat plot is on and one or both of the lists is it using is blank.

This error will also occur when you try to access a blank list or matrix, or when you try to access or manipulate data it a position of a list or matrix that does not exist. (You can store data into the next open position of a list. If you are editing a list in the list editor, you won't have to worry about putting data in an impossible position)

How do you graph on a ti-84 calculator?

Press Y= to see the equations. Enter and equation in, using x as the variable. (Press X,T,θ,n for an x.) Enter an equation and press GRAPH to see it.

(If you need to graph parametric, polar, or sequential equations, press MODE and select the graph type you need. Select FUNC for normal y= equations.)
